I feel ya. I wish I could wear my velvet frock coat, leggings and tall boots ALL THE TIME. I also love a sweeping, multi-layered skirt and a gorgeous little jacket. I DO like hats, though I can't do my hair to save my life, so no hats for me (unless they work with hair being down).

I would wear it if I had it, and have - my sis in law made it a practice, years ago, to go to the grocery in our quasi-Ren Faire dresses and whatnot, for the fuck of it. It was fun as hell!

The ONLY reason Victorian fashion is "flattering" is the underpinnings. Take it from a maker whose partner is a wearer. You'd best be wearing a corset and bustle or nothing will even fit you, let alone flatter you. OTOH at least Victorian corsets, properly made, are not uncomfortable - which is why you see them heavily used in steampunk and other aesthetics. Those coats are tailored with extra fine-line seams meant to fit over a corset, so without one, the only people it would look good on are people who are natuarally hourglass-waisted with a small bust and precisely-sized hips. Take away all the seaming and you have a men's square boxy blazer.
