what are your favorite non-medicine headache treatments?

(Anonymous) 2022-09-09 11:04 pm (UTC)(link)
I've already taken some meds.

Drink lots of water. Put a cool, wet towel over your head. Turn off the lights and try to rest.

Depends on the type of headache. Ice for migraine and tension, heat for sinus or allergy headache. eyemask, ear plugs, dark room. Nap.

Caffeine and lots of it. Granted mine tend to be about either migraines, caffeine withdrawal, or dehydration, so drinking something caffeinated actively helps two of those and ... kinda breaks even on the third, I guess.

I second caffeine for a migraine. Sometimes helps for tension too. Does nothing for sinus/allergy headaches, though.

DA I've found that hot drinks will help with sinus headaches.

Really for my own sinus/allergy headaches, the only thing that helps is stuffing my nose with (hopefully hypoallergic) toilet paper. It's miserable.

Shit so it's not just me? Everyone goes "no coffee means no migraines!" but I think that drinking less coffee triggered my migraines to begin with - my new workplace didn't have coffee and then I startled having BAD migraines ... Only helped by my caffeine drink of choice + ergot pills with caffeine?? I thought it was placebo effect though.

Caffeine is an extremely addictive drug and caffeine withdrawal causes awful, shitty, no-good, terrible headaches.

However, once you push on through to the other side and wean yourself off (tapering may help), they should go away.

My migraines are kind of weird in that I usually get all the symptoms (aura, nausea, sensitivity to light/sound/motion, etc.) EXCEPT the headache, and when I get the headache it's a pretty mild one. But I read somewhere that caffeine does something to the blood vessels that cause migraines (opens them up for better blood flow or something?), and so it can provide some relief...

I'd been avoiding caffeine for years due to being really sensitive to it, and the possibility of it triggering panic attacks, but I stopped having those and week-long migraines after starting a severely restricted diet (not the effect I was hoping for, but I'll take it). So I figured I'd give it a shot when I had a particularly nasty one... and indeed, no panic attack, and the migraine lightened way up.

Of course now I drink coffee almost constantly because it helps my digestion, so if I skip a couple days, I get a withdrawal headache that feels similar to migraines but no other symptoms. :P

This happened to me when I got off caffeine. I never had migraines before in my life, but about two months after I quit caffeine, I started getting ocular migraines: a growing aura in my left eye until I couldn't see out of it for about half an hour, and about twenty minutes after the aura started I'd get pain in the right side of my head. Getting caffeine the minute the aura started would more often than not stop the pain from appearing, but once the aura started I just had to ride it out.

Strangely, I tried getting off the caffeine again once I started working from home during the pandemic.... with no migraines this time. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Donuts. I’m not even kidding. Or something sweet. If the headache meds can’t touch my headache then something else is causing it then my usual issues and that something is usually a drop in sugar. And even when it isn’t, I am happy eating sweets so the serotonin boost helps fight off the headache enough for the medicine to start working.

... in my experience if the source is neuroinflammation it may get worse, so careful.

Sometimes I can get a headache if I'm also hangry (if course, if I haven't been eating, I may also be dehydrated and possibly tired or stressed, which don't help). In those instances, eating anything helps raise my blood sugar. It doesnt have to be sweets.

It depends on where the headache is. Generally speaking, if the headache is at the front, you need more sleep. If it's on the top, you need more water. If it's at the back, you need less stress. On the sides/banded around, you need caffeine. Generally speaking.

Seconding ice packs and hot drinks, adding peppermint oil, especially for sinus headaches. It's dangerous to put it on your skin undiluted but I do anyway.

Hot - like, really hot - showers help sometimes. So does my roll pillow, with a heating pad placed on it, jacked up to HOT (it automatically turns off, so it's not a danger to my skin, I feel obliged to point out.)

Argh. I should clarify that the roll pillow goes under my neck while I lie in bed.

My headaches are usually triggered by tension and pain in my upper shoulders and neck moving up to my head. This usually happens when I haven't exercised my back/shoulders enough.

Which means my go to head ache remedy is back massage with a trigger ball, massage hook, massage roller, or hand in all my tight places. A bit of yoga usually also helps. Then tylenol and a hot water bottle on my upper back.

A dark room and some gentle classical music, something heavy on the strings and light on the brass and percussion.
