Because maybe someone else needs advice too.

Care Credit

(Anonymous) 2022-09-14 10:35 pm (UTC)(link)
is Care Credit legit? Has anyone else used it? Is there a catch? Is it a bad idea?

I saw a doctor today who wants me to get this medical device that will cost me 2500 and which my insurance won't cover. I can't afford it right now. If I do care credit it would be 12 monthly payments. Otherwise I'll have to wait a couple months at least before I can afford.

I only have one credit card. I've only ever had one credit card. So this thing makes me uncomfortable. But this device would really help me with medical issue I've been having.

I have heard some people say good things about it, but my experience was very much not good. However, it was also while I was much younger and the first time I'd ever had a credit card, so it's quite possible that I just handled things very stupidly, so... if someone has better experience with them more recently their take probably is better than mine.

OP

My take from the links above is that it works okay as long as you make the monthly payments and pay off on time. The issue is if you miss a payment or haven't fully paid off because then interest kicks in, and it is high.

Personally, I'm not going to have an issue with the monthly payments. I just can't put the medical bill on my credit card right now due to some stupid purchases, surprise medical bills, and other things leaving my card almost maxed out. It is going to take me 2 paychecks to pay it off fully.

Yeah, I looked at the links above and... I guess there was a time period I was supposed to pay it off and I wasn't aware of that? Because I made at least the minimum payment every month, threw in what extra I could, but the amount left kept getting higher and higher (even though I did pay on time every month, apparently the high interest kicked in somewhere). Then they suddenly stopped sending me bills (this was before people were banking/paying bills online for the most part), so I thought "oh they realized the extra I threw in actually paid it all off I guess?"

Couple years later, debt collectors started constantly hounding me for thousands of dollars and my credit score was so crap I couldn't do anything like rent an apartment for a few years once I had a job again.

But yeah, lots of people do seem to be saying it's at least more legitimate than those payday loan places, as long as you follow instructions to the letter.

If they give you zero or very low interest so long as you pay on time, and you know you can always pay on time (or early), and maybe even more than the minimum due, it sounds like a perfectly fine thing to do.

OR - depending on your credit you could call your c.card company and tell them about your issue, and see if they will give you more credit on your card. If you're an old, always-on-time customer, sometimes they will do that.

Good luck!

My spouse has one. It stresses me out a little, but we don't always have cash on hand to cover medical expenses. They way I understand it (I am not a banker or health care provider or primary user of a card) is that you aren't charged interest if you pay off the debt in the agreed upon time. Usually 6 or 12 months, IDK if there are other options. So it's like an interest free loan which is pretty great. But if you don't pay it off in that time frame it charges you credit card like interest, which is pretty brutal. I doubt the minimum payment will pay off that debt in time, so keep the math in mind.

I don't know how regular or reliable is your income, how much your life would be improved having this device a few months early, or how much stress this will cause you on top of everything else. But it my really uninformed opinion it'd probably be a good idea to get the device on credit and pay it off in a few months when you'd otherwise be able to. Might as well spend that time with the medical support you need.

I have Care Credit, but use it for my dog’s vet bills. He has epilepsy and has been hospitalized a few times. The last time I used it, the bill was around two thousand bucks and I was able to pay it off in a year with no interest. Just don’t miss a payment, double-check the length of time you have to pay it off with no interest, and you’ll be okay.

Echoing a lot of other people -- I've used it mostly for either dental procedures or eyeglasses. As long as you make your payments on time (and within the promotional time, if offered -- the promotion is usually no interest if you pay it off within X months) and if you're able to pay more than the minimum, you'll be fine. And when I say more than the minimum, I mean if you can afford that -- if all you can pay is the minimum of $20 or $50, then it is what it is. But paying even $5 or $10 if that's all you've got extra is a generally good practice for credit cards overall (can't charge me interest if I'm not holding a balance, or very large interest if the balance isn't that big.)
