Me too anon! Unfortunately the fandoms that I'm in don't really have prequels, but the good thing about that is that it leaves plenty of room for fan interpretations.

I'm nearly always disappointed by them since they seem to so often tank a characterization or change a backstory that I like.

There are a lot of prequels where it doesn't even feel like it's about the same characters and that really annoys me. Also, a lot of times, when they make prequels, people will say that you should read / watch them first, which is absolutely insane.

It's great when it's actually done well.

YMMV for me personally, if the story can stand on its own while also tying into the original story well, fleshing out lore/world building/characters without it feeling shoe horned, then I'm OK with prequels. Some are really well done but many tend to suffer from "build a story around the ending" and often rely too much on Easter eggs or callouts to the future that I'm not engaged.
