Your favorite prequels

Inspired by secret #8, what are some of your favorite prequels?
kaijinscendre: (michael fassbender smoking)

I loved and still love Prometheus. Gorgeous movie with great music.

Only half of it counts, but The Godfather II.

I also really liked X-Men First Class.

Star Wars prequels, Rogue One, Obi-Wan, Rebels, Clone Wars, and so far Andor
Magician's Nephew is my favorite Narnia book
The Silmarillion sort of counts
I like some of the DUne prequel books written by the son and Kevin J. Anderson (mostly just the Great House trilogy)
House of Dragons is really good so far, I'm liking it more than GOT?
Rings of Power has been decent so far.
I like Red Dragon more than Silence of the Lambs
Underworld: Rise of the Lycans is my favorite of the trilogy
X-Men: First Class
Star Trek: Strange New Worlds and Discovery (started as a prequel anyway)
I enjoyed Fire And Blood more than any of the Song of Ice and Fire books
Before Green Gables is a great prequel book
Smallville

Lots of them. I think a good prequel can be really great.

Another vote for X-Men: First Class.

I also really liked The Magician’s Nephew from the Chronicles of Narnia.

The Thing (2011 film).
The Thing from John Carpenter is my favourite horror movie of all time and I think that this prequel was good enough. The one thing that screwed it was that the monsters were in bad CGI. If they used the animatronics like they first intended to, it's be a very good horror movie IMHO. Still, I greatly enjoyed it even with all its flaws.

Torna for Xenoblade 2.

Could just be I was burned out on all the damn horniness of the main game though, idk.

Good characters who are overrated

[personal profile] philstar22 2022-09-29 01:17 am (UTC)(link)
What are some characters who you actually like, you just think they are overrated by the creators or by the fandom? Like, they are good, but they aren't amazing or perfect as they are made out to be.

Inspired by several Deep Space Nine lists I've seen recently that claim Garak is not only the best DS9 character but the best Trek character and even one of the best characters created ever. Nope. Garak is great. But there are lots of great Trek characters. He's not in a league of his own the way some like to talk about.

Re: Good characters who are overrated

(Anonymous) 2022-09-29 01:21 am (UTC)(link)
Garak is definitely not the best Trek character (Spock is, I don't think anyone else is in the conversation) but I do think he's definitely in the top 5

Anyway, my answer is Spencer Reid

Percy Jackson. As a longtime fan of the books who only looked at the fandom at all when the Disney series was announced, I was shocked that he had a big fangirl following. Some booktuber was like "We fans all know he was all of our first book crush" and just what? Even if I'd been young enough for that to potentially be true for me, why would it? He works well as a protagonist, but there are so many other characters in that franchise that are obviously way better written along with also being more the type I'd expect fangirls to latch onto.

YouTube Watching/Binging

What channels (or series, or whatever) are you watching these days?

(Me? I'm all over the place and confusing the algorithm.)

My new favorite thing is people making miniature models and figures:

I especially like:
- Studson Studio (such a great, calming voice, funny ideas, and fun stop-motion bits)
- MechcanicalFiend (sweetly relatable, while also very talented)
- Bill Making Stuff (odd, charming, and very creative)

Frogs. Lizards. Comedy bits. And then suddenly I get hit with a very stylized how to dye/style your OOAK doll video. I wasn't made because he did a very good job and I was vaguely into OOAK dolls for a minute. Went as far as buying a cheap Barbie, but never went all the way. But that was at least 5 years ago. And I never watched any related videos using that account.

For the uninitiated, OOAK dolls are One Of A Kind Dolls. And they can vary from simply redoing the make up on a Mattel Barbie doll to full encroaching onto Ball Jointed Doll territory. But essentially, you're customizing the doll and making it "one of a kind". From removing the face paint and making your own, to installing new hair, dying and styling it, even making changes to the actual facial structure (depending on the base of the doll). Results vary and depend on the aesthetic you're going for, but there's some seriously talented people out there. And even those who might not rate up there, it's still really cool that they do that !

Soviet Sherlock Holmes. Partly I'm boggling at the thought that 1890s Britain was considered suitable TV by the regime. Partly it's just bloody good in its own right. I like the rooms at Baker Street, though they're not bright and airy enough, and I like the settings, though the wealth is a bit too wealthy and ostentatious. Holmes is a bit too kindly but he's nice. And then there's the moment when the police bang on the door in the middle of the night and you're reminded that this would have been a familiar thing to its audience.

the writer of this fic has written both characters in the OTP each dating other people while they figure out that they like each other

and i'm frankly furious

(Anonymous) 2022-09-29 07:05 am (UTC)(link)
Don't Like, Don't Read.

Unless this is your way of saying you've discovered a new favorite trope.

(Anonymous) 2022-09-29 07:35 am (UTC)(link)
Why would you be furious? The two characters like each other so it's tagged appropriately regardless if they like other characters too.
