I feel this, I was looking at rescues a while back but I don't have a large social circle and had no idea wtf I would do for non-family references. They also required you to have a fenced in yard (which I understand for large dogs but I wanted to adopt a freakin' maltese, it wouldn't be allowed unleashed in the yard!) and had a lot of questions that seemed to indicate if you were unmarried, lived alone and had to actually leave the house to work they wouldn't approve you. I get that they want the dogs to go to good homes but it's so frustrating to see all this 'adopt, don't shop' and then places make it impossible to adopt unless you meet very specific requirements. I would be happy to adopt a dog but the pet stores and private breeders are the only ones who don't make it impossible :/

frankly I think single people make better dog owners than families, you don't have to worry about some brat who thinks it's fun to torture the dog. I used to be a vet's assistant and had to quit because I couldn't stand to see what some little snots were allowed to do to animals.

we had to move because our dog was being teased and tormented through the fence by the neighbour's kids. I can't imagine being a vet's assistant and seeing that shit every day. it's also why I never blame an animal if it attacks its family - there's likely a good reason
