....Yeah. I saw a bunch of Twitter threads with people explaining that when they said "Don't watch the Kenshin reboot because the creator is a pedophile", they actually meant like... literally he was arrested and charged for having a ton of recordings of children being molested. Not "he ships underage characters" or something. Literally a pedo, definitely not just differing opinions about where to draw the line in "problematic" fictional relationships.

Sigh.

I get what they want, but - and please excuse me for not finding a more polite way to say this, but I'm tired and don't have the energy - I think that what they want in this context is stupid.

Yeah I understand what they want, but Ao3 isn't the site for them in this regard. Personally I'm fine with picking a tag and scrolling through it to read what I want, but I think a lot of us older people in fandom don't realize just how much the younger gen have been socialized to have media be given to them by algorithms. I'll joke any day about how much time I spend online but the younger gen really have been raised online in a way we haven't, it's actually scary in certain regards.

...Ironically, almost all of the conversations about it I've seen are what's listed in that last line, more or less. A lot of discussion of personal data collection and monetization, and learned helplessness, which may at some point include a line about "it's really not that hard to filter by tags".

Of course thanks to algorithms, I was seeing TONS of those conversations for like two days and now I haven't seen one for awhile. Stupid algorithms.

(At least I finally trained Twitter to recognize that all I want to see other than my friends' own content is bunny pictures. Not sure why it's all Japanese rabbits but rabbits are rabbits. I'm okay with that part of the algorithm.)
