But as far as I can tell that's true! Yeesh. The number of threads we've had on this and yet not one person has actually quoted anything. It's getting exhausted now. As far as I can tell this is just moral high ground grabbing mixed with a very very hefty dose of misogyny.

Fuck off

(Anonymous) 2022-10-01 07:00 am (UTC)(link)
This just adds to that impression. Where's the actual goddamn evidence?

That's a no, there isn't any then. Good to know.

There are none so blind as those who refuse to look. Seems like nothing would satisfy you on that score.

yeah, I clicked thinking there was something but nope, lol.

(Anonymous) 2022-10-01 06:46 am (UTC)(link)
I definitely don't think she's done nothing wrong, but yeah, I can 100% understand why she feels like the majority of the things she's being accused of are based on fabrication for the sake of moral outrage. The shit she's actually done is like A, B, J, and M; meanwhile half the internet has convinced itself she's done the whole damn alphabet.

(Anonymous) 2022-10-01 08:35 am (UTC)(link)
Good analogy.

(Anonymous) 2022-10-01 08:48 am (UTC)(link)
I believe her pen name as an adult novelist was an unfortunate instance of having heard the name of a conversion therapy advocate sometime in her life and it being stuck in her subconscious, only to get pulled up randomly when she went to make a pen name without her remembering where she'd heard it. She is very transphobic, but not that homophobic, and she chose the name before I think trans people were even on her mind. She wouldn't support that kind of conversion therapy, let alone so brazenly as to name herself after a guy who did. So I think the people who see her pen name as a dogwhistle are mistaken.

Other things... hmm, don't think she was trying to get attention or cookies when she said Dumbledore was gay. I don't think she thought it would get that much attention, it was just supposed to be a quick answer to a kids question to be forgotten like most of her trivia. The press did all the work on that one. And I never really got how Cho Chang was a wildly racist name, so there's that.

So she hasn't done the whole alphabet, but she's still done a good deal of it.

(Anonymous) 2022-10-01 09:40 am (UTC)(link)
She's really not transphobic.

(Anonymous) 2022-10-01 01:34 pm (UTC)(link)
Right, she's just "gender critical"

(Anonymous) 2022-10-01 10:33 am (UTC)(link)
the racism is supposed to be that "cho chang" is so stereotypically chinese-sounding that it'd be like calling someone "ching chong chang the chinaman", but when chang is still (last time i checked) the most common surname in the world it's a little more understandable

jk has had well-documented issues with picking random common-sounding names for characters (see the whole mark evans debacle)

both of which lead me to believe that jk's problems are definitely not issues of racism, and possibly not as much issues of phobia as are attributed to her; jk's problems are issues of ignorance and thoughtlessness, which on the modern internet aren't considered to be different from -ism

(Anonymous) 2022-10-01 03:18 pm (UTC)(link)
Cho and Chang are also both surnames. So it's as if she had one Irish girl in her entire series and named her O'Malley McMurphy. Even for JKR, that's lazy as fuck.

(Anonymous) 2022-10-01 08:04 pm (UTC)(link)
exactly! it's lazy, it's thoughtless, and it's ignorant

but is it actually racist? that's where i think there's some reaching going on

She has used her Twitter platform to directly support transphobic businesses and politics.

She frequently mocks medically-inclusive language (ie "people with uteruses" vs "women").

She is a big fan of using trans women as scare tactics--that they're just here to rape and abuse us poor helpless cis women. This came up directly in her blog post years ago.

It's not a giant mystery--it's a pattern. And yeah, some things are more vague, but as a comparison, it's like saying "we should protect the children" when discussing gay rights; it's outright making the leap that gay people are threats to children without having to SAY it, and now she's capitalizing on "but I didn't SAY it".

(Anonymous) 2022-10-01 03:58 pm (UTC)(link)
Thank you for actually trying to break it down and be specific. My main problem with what you've said is that the line for 'transphobic' is blurred by the social media outrage machine and frequently used in insane ways. So just telling me she's supported transphobic businesses, or that she uses scare tactics doesn't really mean much without more info. I would very happily read an analysis, but the only ones I can find are ones that do the exact same thing- claim transphobia but can't give actual examples.

(Anonymous) 2022-10-01 05:17 pm (UTC)(link)
FYI the reason that people don't want to engage with you is because they don't think you're arguing in good faith. At least I know that's true for me.

(Anonymous) 2022-10-01 07:29 pm (UTC)(link)
There are several requests for more info in this thread and only one comment that actually provides specifics instead of generalisations, or saying 'fuck off'

AYRT here's a link with more details about businesses she's supported and what THEY in turn openly support: https://www.insider.com/jk-rowling-terf-online-store-selling-anti-trans-merch-2020-9

Here's her tweet outright mocking medically inclusive language: https://twitter.com/jk_rowling/status/1269382518362509313?lang=en (it affects no one, actually, to describe medical issues with medical language. If this is information for people with uteruses, anyone and everyone who happens to have a uterus, regardless of gender, should pay attention. Heck, even cis women may not have uteruses. Things like this actually allow for better care and more open access to those who need it, including trans men.)

And in her article here-- https://www.jkrowling.com/opinions/j-k-rowling-writes-about-her-reasons-for-speaking-out-on-sex-and-gender-issues/ --while she obviously expresses a lot of sympathy in the right places, she still equates "biologically male" with "dangerous", asserts that trans men are misguided lesbians (as a lesbian, I am very familiar with this "concern" and I recommend people to read Leslie Feinburg for more actual queer-led discussion on this issue), and asserts that opening doors to transwomen puts "natal women" at risk, because the Awful Biologically Male Perverts will lie to sneak in and attack.

Again, I want to point out that last one, because I've heard the "protect women from male violence" line. I understand where that fear comes from! I do! However, it is the equivalent of the same arguments that forbid gay couples from adopting children--that the act of being queer itself increases the risk of threat. If you would agree that bans on gay adoptions are homophobic, then the "trans people are hiding sexual predators" is transphobic.

If you're still willing to listen, I'll add this: internet echo chambers and screaming matches are awful. I personally don't think anyone should be on Twitter, for all the bullshit it engenders. However, to be more level-headed, the various "-phobias" and "-isms" should, in my opinion, not be seen as a permanent brand on one's forehead, but a post-it note added to unkind behavior, to be pointed out and examined and changed. To that end, I'm not saying that JK Rowling is Transphobic And Therefore Satan. I'm saying that JK Rowling has done and said transphobic things.

(Anonymous) 2022-10-01 07:27 pm (UTC)(link)
Thank you, seriously. I will read these tonight.

(Anonymous) 2022-10-01 07:32 pm (UTC)(link)
Also, regarding your last note - I completely agree. The screaming matches just enforce division and allows no space for evolution. It just makes everything worse.

(Anonymous) 2022-10-01 08:09 pm (UTC)(link)
"However, to be more level-headed, the various "-phobias" and "-isms" should, in my opinion, not be seen as a permanent brand on one's forehead, but a post-it note added to unkind behavior, to be pointed out and examined and changed."

this is the modern internet though, where anyone who exhibits behaviours consistent with any of those things is to be permanently banished to the outside of one's safe space, and anyone who claims to have changed or wanted to change is a liar and a hypocrite (and can be proved to be a hypocrite with a previous twitter career's full of evidence against them)

i agree, i don't think anyone should be on twitter and internet echo chambers are rubbish, but last-word-ism followed by disengagement is just how it's done these days

She called a woman heroic when that woman said all trans women as doing the equivalent of blackface and if that isn't transphobic I don't know what you consider transphobic and we're done here.

(Anonymous) 2022-10-01 09:44 pm (UTC)(link)
But...it IS the equivalent of blackface. You wouldn't be questioning my lived experience now, would you, hmm?
