Petty fandom rants

(Anonymous) 2022-10-02 01:12 am (UTC)(link)
I'm so annoyed that all but a couple of the fics for my cute, fluffy new OTP is all dark and fucked up. I LIKE dark and fucked up stuff, when it fits the pairing/fandom, but in this case I just want fluffy and adorable. I've learned recently, though, that it's apparently common that cute/fluffy ships get dark fics and vice versa. Somehow I've completely missed that in all my years of fandom, and I don't like it. :(

Been hearing that complaint a lot lately.

I get so annoyed about how fic that's supposed to be set in the past nevertheless feels incredibly modern. Part of what makes me interested in reading these stories is precisely the fact that the characters don't have exactly the same experiences and ways of thinking that people today do. So lean into that! Show us how these characters' environment shapes their way of thinking.

It's especially annoying because like 90% of the time, it feels like it's just the writer taking the characters and applying a thick layer of modern queer internet subculture on top of everything.

YEAH

It's a huge pet peeve of mine because especially in my current fandom hyperfixation, I'm NOT interested in modern AUs, and when writers don't bother to even keep the *canon tone*, let alone research what life was like even thirty-five years ago?

Oh my god, yes. It doesn't even go this deep for me. Sometimes it makes it so obvious that the author is too young to know what life was like in even the RECENT past, so they do goofy shit like having college students in the 90's constantly texting each other and, jfc, Googling stuff while driving.

Oh man it reminds me of a fic I read months ago where a character called themselves demisexual, in the 80s! It's bad enough seeing queer being used in a good way by straight characters in any fic set back then to describe gay characters. Queer was still a slur in the 80s and you wouldn't react great to straight people calling you queer. I didn't. But demisexual!? Arghhh!

New Taskmaster episode

(Anonymous) 2022-10-02 02:08 am (UTC)(link)
I'm not thrilled about this new series. It's only been one episode, but even so, I think it's the first one that I've felt this negative about. And that's fine... I might change my mind after a few episodes once the cast gets to know each other better or maybe this just isn't a series for me.

But I'm properly annoyed about how it's being dealt with on r/Taskmaster. Several negative - but not very impolite - comments were deleted by mods. And the few that remained were seriously downvoted. Including one that basically said "I'm not sure if it's an off season or if it's just my depression playing up." (I have a particular empathy for that. I can't always tell whether things have changed or if it's "just in my head" because I have a shitty mood disorder.)

Anyway, it all makes me not want to engage with the forum, which sucks because no one I know IRL is interested in the show. I was hoping r/Taskmaster would be a nice place to vent about "not getting it" and to be able discuss the new series, all in hopes of coming around to enjoying it. But I guess only blanket positivity is allowed.

I'll try another episode or two, but probably not comment on the subreddit, lest I get shamed for my "wrong" opinion.

I *hate* the blanket positivity thing. It's such BS.

tfw when your current fandom has multiple adaptations of the source material and the version that the fandom constantly gushes over is the bad one. weak production values. character bashing. romance arcs that are very teehee! it feels like it was scripted by a bad ficwriter from the 90s.

(in principle, i think people should have fun with what they like without being judged for that. i really do! but sometimes it is very hard not to judge.)

Re: Petty fandom rants

(Anonymous) 2022-10-02 03:47 am (UTC)(link)
In my fandom it's different timelines/realities rather than different adaptations, but yeah, same. The popular one is nowhere near as good or interesting as my favorite, which barely anyone seems to like.

People need to use Background A/B tagging more often. If they're not the main pairing of your fic, or don't have a significant scene, they're BACKGROUND.

Re: Petty fandom rants

(Anonymous) 2022-10-02 03:43 am (UTC)(link)
I hate that, especially when you ship a rarepair and get super excited to see them in a fic but it turns out they're barely in it. :(

Re: Petty fandom rants

(Anonymous) 2022-10-02 02:48 am (UTC)(link)
I got into a new fandom and from the source material and nothing else, came up with a theory that I was sure the entire fandom had also caught onto and maybe even considered canon. Then I look at the fandom and... no mention of it. It's not even on the TV Tropes WMG page, which led me to believe I might actually be the first one to think of it.

But I have no fandom presence, so if I posted it on any of my SM accounts, nobody would see it. So I kept it to myself. Then a few days later someone else had a lightbulb moment and posted "OH MY GOD YOU GUYS WHAT IF______" and it was my theory! And it got attention. We may never find out if it's true or not, but it makes sense and I'm bitter that I missed my chance to at least get it out on the internet first. Even if nobody saw it when I posted it, I could've at least had a timestamp for posterity if it ever comes true.

And as the icing on the cake, the person who posted the theory that got attention is an anti.

Re: Petty fandom rants

(Anonymous) 2022-10-02 03:09 am (UTC)(link)
Uggghhh, that sucks! It reminded me of how several seasons ago, I was the first to come up with a certain theory for one of my fandoms, and posted about it on a forum. But by the time my theory was proven correct, the forum had undergone some updates and all the posts before a certain date were deleted so I had no proof that I was right, lol.

And there have been a handful of times recently where someone said something factually wrong about the canon on a platform where I didn't have an account so I wasn't able to say anything, or I did have an account but didn't see it until several days later and no one would've noticed if I had said something. So frustrating! (Probably just as well because most people don't like being told they're wrong and it probably would've caused drama.)

There are only two versions of this character in visual media. Both have brown eyes, not blue. Also ffs he's not even my fave character, but if he's yours and you're basing fic or art on the adaptation you say you are? He's got really dark brown hair. Not light brown and very very definitely not blond.

Re: Petty fandom rants

(Anonymous) 2022-10-02 03:14 am (UTC)(link)
There's a character in my main fandom who's biracial and fairly light-skinned, yet the majority of the fan artists draw them super dark. I feel like I can never say anything about it because I'd be accused of being racist by trolls, but half the time the art barely even resembles the character because the coloring is so off, and it's annoying.

Re: Petty fandom rants

(Anonymous) 2022-10-02 05:08 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah this has been an issue ever since fan artists started being accused of whitewashing characters of color, to the point now we're living in a sort of Emperor's New Clothes reality where everyone can see that there's something off but no one can say anything about it.

Re: Petty fandom rants

(Anonymous) 2022-10-02 03:41 am (UTC)(link)
I recently read a fic where the ship is supposed to be the canon couple's great-great grandkids, who were named after them, set far in the future. Yet it's tagged as Character A/Character B and not Character A's great-great grandkid/Character B's great-great grandkid, who are OCs, not canon characters. And all their coworkers and friends have the same names as the canon characters. It's a little hard to believe that they ALL were named after their great-great grandparents.

I know, it's fanfic, I probably shouldn't put that much thought into it, but it bugs me. I don't know why they couldn't have just made it an AU set in the future with the same characters instead of going with the whole great-great grandkid thing, which makes zero sense when you think about it longer than two seconds.

Re: Petty fandom rants

I'm in a fandom full of teenagers who are more interested in finding discourse (to the point where they're creating sideblogs to spam the tags with how 'problematic' the fandom and creator are) or are ready to nitpick at every opportunity.
Then they have the balls to complain about not getting enough interaction and 'everyone should criticize but don't' - and now they're complaining that the creator isn't creating enough stuff for these people.

It's gotten so bad I'm just hoping that the creator just get done with this series and leave these fuckers hanging.

(Anonymous) 2022-10-02 03:49 am (UTC)(link)
Ugh. I'm dealing with that kind of thing in a fandom for the first time, and it's exhausting. I got to the point where I just blocked everyone involved in that kind of drama, and it's much more peaceful now.

FFXIV fandom needs to get the entire fuck over imagining the twins are way younger than they actually are. By now they're at least 20!

And jfc even if you subscribe to the ~time bubble~ theory (which is stupid), you're really gonna try to tell me that someone who has literally made a name for himself on the global political stage is incapable of consenting to a relationship that might involve sex? Really?

Re: Petty fandom rants

(Anonymous) 2022-10-02 04:24 am (UTC)(link)
My fave contemporary author is always going on about how a TV adaptation is his holy grail and the rest of the fandom always tell him they hope it will happen, how great a show about this or that series would be, etc.

I think he and the supportive fans are incredibly naive if they think an adaption would even distantly resemble the source material written by Mr Self Published Nobody. He wouldn’t have any creative control and the show would be made to appeal to GoT/HoD viewers which means reinventing the source material. Those viewers wouldn’t translate to many new readers.

But I think what bothers me most is that as an early supporter of a good author, I feel betrayed that he isn’t writing for his audience but instead he’s admitted he is writing in the hopes of getting an entirely different audience in a different medium.

Re: Petty fandom rants

(Anonymous) 2022-10-02 04:59 am (UTC)(link)
You're likely right about the creative control. OTOH, having your novel/series turned into a show or theatrically released movie will almost always result in a very big spike in sales for the author.

As for your last paragraph...ehh? I get where you're coming from I guess, but honestly, it's brutal out there for 99% of all authors; I really can't blame them for playing the game.

Your fave probably just wants his bag. Can't blame him in this economy.

I love AO3 tags. I love when people tag for things in the story: tropes, kinks, vibes, setting details, anything. I have a skin that adds a scroll bar to tags so it's never too long.

People who hate on any tag but fandom and main pairing a) have never had to find a half rembered fic from 8 years ago and b) are just so profoundly boring like people who insist the only acceptable sandwich is plain turkey on white bread. You do you, but please don't try to stop people from being cool and helpful.
