I just went and put this on my To Read list on Goodreads.

It's not a terrible book, but honestly, I found it a bit too depressing for my taste. If you're interested in other Jane Austen related novels, I recommend:

The Other Bennet Sister by Janice Hadlow
What Kitty Did Next, by Carrie Kablean
Return to Longbourn, by Shannon Winslow
The Darcys of Pemberley, by Shannon Winslow

What Kitty Did Next sounds fun!

It was. Really thoughtful character development and her own story, which was great. I finished it and thought, oh yes, this is absolutely the sort of gap that fanfiction is meant to fill.

I agree that comparing modern writers who write in the period to Jane Austen is generally an extremely overblown comparison.

But I don't see why people shouldn't publish books about the servants if people want to read them. You don't, and that's fine, but some people do.

One of the most famous books in the 18th century was about a servant. (Pamela) Though I'll admit the whole point was that she ended up married to the guy who owned the estate.

That's not why I read Austen either, but it is why I read this book!

I'm actually interested in the premise of this book... but am turned off by the fact that it's ostensibly Austen fanfiction. Like, what does making your characters servants of specifically the Bennets serve? Was the author not confident enough about her own ideas, or was it an intentional and (IMO) cheap marketing gimmick?
