Notes:

I've just been deleting a lot of random secrets that are recycling ancient FS memes ("can't unsee these unrelated pictures, would hit random thing, I wish this scene had ended in 'hot non-con sex'") and one person that makes a different secret about a certain actor every week trying to be as wacky as possible.

Transcript: Recently I've been stumbling by Anti-fun takes regarding shipping, from people who don't enjoy shipping, a lot...
"You're disrespecting the creator's work by shipping non-canon!"
"You don't actually like the canon if you ship characters"
"won't someone think of the people who don't enjoy shipping!"
"Don't you know it ruins friendships because it makes guys think being friendly is gay when you ship two fictional pairs of friends??"
"Why can't Man and Woman only be friends? (Even though they are still only friends in canon.)"
And I'm at my fucking limit.

Seems made up.

(Anonymous) 2022-10-14 10:14 pm (UTC)(link)
You seriously haven't seen these takes? This feels incredibly standard to me, especially in older fandoms.

(Anonymous) 2022-10-14 10:16 pm (UTC)(link)
Unfortunately no, this shit is incredibly common and just won't.go.away.

(Anonymous) 2022-10-14 10:52 pm (UTC)(link)
Yes, this. It's infuriating.

It's not, I see people responding to those sorts of takes off and on over on tumblr. Usually the anti-shippers are also purity wankers, so I try to avoid every flavor of that stupidity.

(Anonymous) 2022-10-14 10:54 pm (UTC)(link)
You're very lucky you haven't encountered these arguments.
I think it depends heavily on the fandoms. The one with the younger demographics usually don't have this problem.

SA

I said something really stupid regarding the dempgraphic lol:
Look at guys reading shounen manga. YOU'LL GET IT.
"I hate that there are girls shipping these two male characters. They are just friends and also straight" comes out ALL OF THE TIME.

(Anonymous) 2022-10-14 11:44 pm (UTC)(link)
I don’t care what men think of my hobbies.

Those same two men are probably totally cool with shipping two girls together, because that's somehow different.

(Anonymous) 2022-10-15 01:55 am (UTC)(link)
Yep. I used to be friends with some of them. One of them actually asked me to beta his f/f fics but refused to return the favor for my m/m fics. Not that he would've been a good beta anyway, but it was the principle of the thing.

(Anonymous) 2022-10-14 10:59 pm (UTC)(link)
It's not. I've been encountering these particular arguments for at least thirty years, almost as long as I've been in fandom.

I haven't been in fandom quite thirty years but I've seen it as long as I've been in fandom too. These days it's getting tied up in a kind of anti-sex (a strong term but the best I can come up with right now) purity culture that's super-annoying but probably not entirely new either.

(Anonymous) 2022-10-15 04:03 am (UTC)(link)
DA Yeah, I've been in fandom nearly 30 years and find the current "yay, gay characters but they must be kind of sexless" pretty disturbing. I mean, better than no gay characters at all, but still not great.

(Anonymous) 2022-10-15 12:17 am (UTC)(link)
It's not.

I used to be one of these obnoxious people who equated people having fun with disrespect of canon. Took me a while to unlearn it.

(Anonymous) 2022-10-15 02:25 am (UTC)(link)
NA - Yeah, I was pretty heavily canon adherent as well, for quite a long time. I definitely used to think, "If you don't like the story as it is in canon, then what's the point of saying you like the story? If you just change whatever you don't like about canon, then it stops being meaningful to say you're a fan of the story."

To be honest, I still understand why I thought that (even though I probably said some obnoxious things back then that I would cringe very hard at now), and I can understand why some people feel that way now. IMO they're usually coming at the whole "being fannish" thing from a different perspective, is all. For them, fannishness is at least partially about adherence. It's about finding something you think is great and then basically becoming a faithful scholar on the subject of that thing.

Whereas for other people (myself now thoroughly included), fannishness is a lot more about making our own fun with the materials canon lays out for us.

I think both of those ways of being fannish are totally valid--but they can often operate at some degree of cross purposes with each other, often without understanding that they fundamentally don't have the same approach.

Blech, yeah. I don't get why people have to be so *SO* about it. If you don't like shipping, well...okay?

Everybody needs to quit harshing everybody else's bliss.

(Anonymous) 2022-10-15 09:50 am (UTC)(link)
Pro-shippers equally so. Some of us just want to enjoy non-slash stuff too. I hate when pro-shippers barge into fandom spaces and start insulting non-shippers and demanding all the ships and slash. Stay in your own spaces.

(Anonymous) 2022-10-15 11:43 am (UTC)(link)
Or you can just not be homophobic? (Because I can't see another reason for calling out slash specifically.)

(Anonymous) 2022-10-15 11:48 am (UTC)(link)
See, you're sort of hair trigger reactions are exactly what we're talking about. Can you just not. Please. Take it down a couple of notches.

"Some of us just want to enjoy non-slash stuff too"

Missed this before, and I'm even more baffled. Can you not enjoy het then? Or are you under the impression that only slash counts as shipping or something?
