Same thing happened to me. I had a choice between admitting my non-whiteness or apologizing for getting my own culture wrong. I decided not to out myself. Because in certain spaces it's possible to be the wrong kind of non-white person.

I still think of my old fandom sometimes and it can often lead to me remembering a BNF who was clearly a British nationalist. I get the desire to reflect and think about how you could have told that BNF off back then.

You're right, it wouldn't have worked because nobody would have believed you weren't white unless you showed up in person to them to prove it. Photo evidence would be disregarded with "That's not really you." Evidence: The many modern discourses where people were still labelled white, even when they could prove otherwise, because they had a different opinion than someone of their race is supposed to have.

This is what I'm doing with my new fandom identity. You can probably figure out my nationality and my gender from what I've posted, but everything else (race, sexuality, health status, employment status etc.) I'm keeping anonymous. It feels very liberating so far but I've yet to come across someone like your BNF friend.

Yeah, I feel ya. If you ever regret just remember it probably wouldn't have worked unless you sent over pics of your passport.
