You're right, it wouldn't have worked because nobody would have believed you weren't white unless you showed up in person to them to prove it. Photo evidence would be disregarded with "That's not really you." Evidence: The many modern discourses where people were still labelled white, even when they could prove otherwise, because they had a different opinion than someone of their race is supposed to have.
