Care to share why, OP? It's been a couple of years since I last read the manga but back then, the characters have been the same age for about 15 years, I think. Serious "Ash Ketchup, eternal 10-year" old vibes.

Lol seriously. It's especially noticeable because of the episodic format, even if they solved one murder A DAY literal years would have passed but these kids never age.

Okay so it probably helps a lot that the anime has never been released in my country so I've had to construct some relatively elaborate workarounds and now I'm binging the entire thing at work in my thirties.

That said, you asked, so: every non-murder problem Conan faces is due to being small and lacking authority. So many TV shows are really nostalgic about childhood but this is a character who misses his physical strength, who misses the freedoms associated with adulthood, who was perfectly comfortable with adult responsibilities and was excited to get a job he loved on his own terms. Every time you see Shinichi it's like hell yeah, the version of Conan who gets to be his own self, who knows what he wants and how he'll start to reach out for it. The image pull was from an ending credit sequence that was very much related to the idea of Ran and Shinichi having a past together that's a firm foundation for the future they'd surely both want to build one day.

It's nice to watch a show that's so excited about the magic and power of adulthood, you know?

That's a fascinating perspective. It's so different from my own. The manga was published in my country when I was in elementary school so my entire generation grew up with these characters. For us, we're all adults now, they're still the same.

That makes a lot of sense, thanks for elaborating. The series does very much make a point of how annoying/inconvenient being a kid so I can see your point.

Like another anon, I grew up with the series since I was a kid so my predominant sense is that everyone always stays the same, no one ever grows up. Even whenever Conan turns back into Shinichi it's only ever temporary; at the end of the story arc, he's back to being Conan at the same age and facing the same challenges he was 10 years ago. I liked the series a lot when I was younger but nothing really happens. At least not much that actually sticks and has consequences.

Thanks both for your response! I sorta expected only people who grew up with it to comment, and it's definitely different, like I can't imagine myself being particularly interested in what Mickey Mouse or The Smurfs are up to these data, I get it.

I'm so struck by the quality of the writing though - obviously there's a campness baked in, but not more so than things like Miss Marple or Midsommer Murders (think I just outed my own nationality there) in that characters behave similarly over time, they see far too many murders to make sense, the passage of time doesn't work, head injuries never kill - but the character stuff is so consistent, I absolutely love it. There are episodes at a time which aren't terribly interesting but I just get on with my work during those ones, but then there's ones where I demand my wife come down from her office and watch immediately because they're so genuinely sweet and funny and heartfelt. You can see there's a lot of consistent creative control over it, and as an occasional writer I just find the whole thing so impressive. I previously watched and read all of One Piece as an adult who hadn't had access to it before and it was just nothing like as good in terms of raw quality.

Your comparison with One Piece is super interesting to me, because to me it's the other way around: I find One Piece far more compelling both in terms of story beats as well as character work. One of the reasons for that is BECAUSE the story is always moving forward and the characters always growing. Which is something I miss in Detective Conan. There will be some very interesting things happening during one case and then all character growth and consequences seem to be be reset when the next story starts. (Like the elevator scene with Takagi during the bombing case - has that ever been resolved? As far as I remember that was just completely dropped.)

I will reread the series once it's finished though. I like it and I do reread some cases every now and then. Mostly the Kaito Kid stories and cases where Heiji shows up, because I'm basic like that.
