I somewhat agree. If people want others to read their stories, then they should make them as reader-friendly as possible. Do typos happen? All the time. It bugs the hell out of me when I'm reposting a fic from 5 years ago or whatever and I notice a typo. But there's a big difference between a handful of typos and constant mistakes.

I always skim books before I buy them, it's less about errors for me and more the prose. If I don't like an authors writing style I'm not going to be able to get through it for 100's of pages.

I do the same to fic too, I read the first paragraph or so because I'll be able to tell if I'll like it and if I'm not feeling it I close the tab and move on. It's certainly judgemental to some degree as I'm deeming a fic 'not worth my time' but it's a private one that I don't foist on the writer, if I was making a comment about how I skipped over theirs every time I did that would be different and assholish, but quietly walking away isn't.

oh man yeah-- there are some things I give a pass to, like if it's a spag error where it's a homonym and so spellcheck didn't flag it, but it isn't CONSISTENT, it's different from an author continually using too for to because they just don't know the difference. Formatting, though? If someone doesn't know how to start a new paragraph during dialogue, nothing's saving that.

As a general rule I’m not into correcting grammar but you have a right to only read what you want to read. You don’t have to be “fair” about it.

Man, you're reminding me of a fic I'm really enjoying, except everytime I come back to it, I realize how...the way it's written falls somewhere inbetween not my taste to poor grammar (I won't say poorly written -- it could be better -- but I'm not ever complaining to the author, who's effectively gifting the world a very fun idea). And when I do come back to it, I wonder how I get through it each time. I think my brain must do some real time translation and transmutation to change what I'm seeing on the screen to what I envision in my mind.

All that said, definitely agreeing with the anon up thread who takes a look to see if the writing is something they can tolerate or not. I do the same (more or less) and I think my tolerance is pretty high for shitty fics, but there are some that just...I just can't. Maybe it's the way they're treating the first person POV (which i dislike to begin with, unless it's published fiction, not fanfiction), or they stylistic choices shout over their prose. And much like anon above, I just move on, no comments.

Published novels, yes. But I do cut slack for fanfic, cause it's done for free in someone's spare time and hasn't had a professional editor look it over. You will especially run into the situation of a good fanfic author writing in NOT their native language. I'm currently reading a very good fic, with a great premise, characterization, and world building. Very weird and sometimes incorrect diction, though, because english isn't their first language.
