I think I agree with this, but tbh I can't even remember a whole lot of other musical episodes, so they can't have stood out in my mind as either great or terrible.

The Grey's Anatomy one was terrible.

(Anonymous) 2022-10-31 11:53 pm (UTC)(link)
It was so bad, I burst out laughing during what was obviously supposed to be an emotion scene.

On the other hand, I kind of liked the suits song from How I Met Your Mother. And I liked The Flash (crossed-over with Supergirl) one. And whenever they did something musical with Psych, it was pretty good.

IMO random one-off songs in comedy shows are often really good, but full musical episodes are often really bad, especially in hour-long dramas or dramedies.

Why a MEDICAL DRAMA thought it would be a good idea to do a musical episode is absolutely beyond me.

Everybody always acts like Buffy started the musical episode trend but Xena did it first and did it better IMO, especially since The Bitter Suite actually holds up as a narrative regardless of the strength of the songs (Once More With Feeling isn't very good at all storywise and is largely carried by the songs, especially as far as defeating the villain goes).

Oh HELL YES "Bitter Suite." I think that's still my favorite Xena episode. It's such a great emotional piece and really, really cathartic after all the shit both Xena and Gabrielle has been through.

philstar22: (Misc: difference of opinion)

I think some of them have been fun. Also, Galavant is all musical episodes and amazing. And I just like the idea of them.

+1

Galavant is amazing!!

(Anonymous) 2022-11-01 05:15 am (UTC)(link)
Well, Galavant is a musical to start with... Like, they knew what they've been doing

(Anonymous) 2022-10-31 11:38 pm (UTC)(link)
I’m the opposite. I can’t count how many shows I’ve tried and not liked, but still repeatedly watched the musical episode of.

(Anonymous) 2022-10-31 11:42 pm (UTC)(link)
As much as I love Psych, the Psych musical episode was... not a triumph.

(except for Jamaican Inspector Man, obviously)

(Anonymous) 2022-10-31 11:58 pm (UTC)(link)
I loved the musical bit in s3 of The Boys with Kimiko, but it wasn’t a whole episode. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YFMpVKru-e0

Dunno. The Daria! one had some notable moments (in a positive way).

I don't have a strong opinion on this secret, but it's a pretty design.

(Anonymous) 2022-11-01 12:37 am (UTC)(link)
I still wish there'd been a Law & Order musical episode.

I also hate musical episodes, except the one from Scrubs, because that one was hilarious and very well done and even had an in-universe explanation for it

(Anonymous) 2022-11-01 08:27 am (UTC)(link)
I really wanted to like that one, but I personally think the majority of the songs for it were weak, and it wasn’t that funny. The in-universe reason for it was clever, so I agree there.

(Anonymous) 2022-11-01 12:46 am (UTC)(link)
LIES AND SLANDER RIGHT THERE!! Honestly, I don't think I've seen enough modern adaptions (meaning outside of those few precious years they flourished in) to know of any bad ones.

To make an argument for them, I'd wager that the pure fact that any show could include them at all means there must be enough depth and/or filler/care for the characters themselves in order to produce it.
Especially as full seasons are folding after six-ten episodes or so, character episodes are basically nonexistent. So putting in the extra effort to include a Musical episode (which can, and often does, advance both plot- and character development in particular) should technically mean that the same attempt of effort be applied to the characters and their direction even more so than any other episode.

Basically, MUSICAL EPISODES MUST LIVE ON!!!

I hate musical episodes. Even the Buffy one. It’s the second worst episode for me but I can appreciate it for the writing and performances. And even though I don’t know why people love it so much, this is the first time I’ve ever confessed to not liking it. I hated it but I’m not gonna shit on anyone for liking it and I’m not gonna shit on the episode just because it wasn’t my taste.

I hate obsession with musical episodes and I blame Buffy. I like some musical episodes (The Magicians were a mess, but their musical episodes were quite fun). But damn it's so frustrating to hear "this show needs musical episode" for the most random shows. No, they not. They are better without

Agree to disagree.

(Anonymous) 2022-11-01 08:36 am (UTC)(link)
I always have a soft spot for musical episodes, but I agree that most aren’t that good.

I think Buffy’s is overrated, but I don’t hate it completely. I also think the one from Scrubs was disappointing with mostly meh songs, although some catchy and decent ones.

The Daria one was great. And I will always stand by Even Steven’s musical episode being pretty good, with an in-universe reason for it as well.

Other ones from Disney Channel, not so much. I remember one time I was babysitting, and the musical episode for the show That’s So Raven came on after they had been aggressively advertising it all day. I thought it was just so bad, despite Raven Symone being a talented singer. All of the songs were mediocre at best, forgettable and unimpressive. But then, I shouldn’t be surprised considering I didn’t really like the show to begin with.

(Anonymous) 2022-11-01 01:32 pm (UTC)(link)
you take that back! the musical episode in Transformers: Rescue Bots was a marvel and a gift to humanity!!

(Anonymous) 2022-11-01 07:06 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, the Buffy episode was bad too.
