I hope you know those aren't the only options

(Anonymous) 2022-11-06 09:54 pm (UTC)(link)
My question didn't imply that they were the only options, and also, no person would ever think that they were the only options.

Your question literally asks if the OP is British or American.

(Anonymous) 2022-11-06 10:23 pm (UTC)(link)
Yes.

Not the question asker, but are you really trying to imply asking the OP if they are british or american isn't relative to the secret?

By that logic, secret maker really messed up by not doing a large chart of all the different accents in the world and ranking how well they're done by speakers of every other accent in the world.

I'm pointing out the contradiction in the question asker's reply. That's it. I'm not interested in why they asked the question at all.

It possible that the question is assume that OP is either British or American, but I feel the need to point out that there are other reasonable options.

First, there are at least two interpretations of that question…

Are you (British) or (American)?
Are you (British or American)?

Second, outside of academic logic environments, “neither” is usually an acceptable answer.

There’s no actual contradiction though, that I can see. They asked if they were British or American because those are the only groups mentioned in the secret, and never said those were the only opinions that anyone could be. Asking which of the two groups of people OP mentioned they’re apart of isn’t saying only British or American people exist in the world. And like the DA below says, “neither” would have been an option too, and one the anon asking would have most likely found acceptable.

You never pointed out where the contradiction you think exists is, either way. Just said “Your question literally asks if the OP is British or American.”, as if that actually means they think there’s no other nationalities in the world.

The contradiction is you claiming that nobody would interpret it the way it was being interpreted, when judging by the thread, at least one person was interpreting it that way.

(Anonymous) 2022-11-07 02:40 pm (UTC)(link)
I’m not the one who asked the question, nowhere did I say “nobody” would interpret it that way. In fact, my first post in this entire thread was the one you just responded to, I didn’t make any of the others. I should have put DA before my post, admittedly.

But it’s not a contradiction here. To contradict would be to assert the opposite of a statement made by themselves or another person’s statement. Saying “nobody would think those are the only two options” wasn’t a contradiction, because there was nothing to indicate anyone thought that at the time. And I haven’t seen anyone genuinely interpret it that way either way. If anyone did think that was what was being interpreted later, it was after they said “nobody” would think that. And since it happened after, they’re not contradicting themselves or anyone else because what they said was still true until a different person came along, they just turned out to be incorrect that nobody would think that. And the anon who asked the question said “nobody would think those are the only two options”, not “nobody would interpret it as only two options” or whatever you’re trying to say with “nobody would interpret it the way it was being interpreted”.
