Early Christmas People :I

(Anonymous) 2022-11-06 11:37 pm (UTC)(link)
I still have my facebook because its the one social media that I only use for people I know IRL so I check it for messages and occasional scrolls - and there's been at least 3 people showing off that they've put up their decorations already.

Its too soon for me, but if that's what brings them joy in these trying times than so be it \o/
I was curious if anyone else knows someone like this - or is someone who got their decorations up on the 1st November?

I'm usually the type to wait after Thanksgiving, but the last few years have been weird shit, so it just varies now. It's the 6th and I don't have anything up yet. There's a good chance I'll break into the Celtic Christmas tunes by mid-month though. (Well. Maybe. Might depend on various things, including my mood.)

My Xmas stuff usually goes up around 1 December, but as I only have about five things (including some form of small tree), it's not much of an effort.

that scene from Community where the woman's beating up a Christmas Elf and says "IT'S DECEMBER 10TH" sums my feelings up completely.

We had people here already decorating for Christmas back in September.

Do you know their cultural background by any chance? I ask because I know of at least one that celebrates starting in September and going through until the end of December.

Me me meeeee! I love the lights and the tinsel and the garlands and how it makes everything so pretty.

I do try to keep my glee for the holiday decor (it's really more about the decor than Christmas itself for me) on the downlow outside of my home until Dec 1 though. Some people get really mean about decorating early and that's never fun.

ohhh yeah I already saw a few posts from people posting pics of their cat trying to knock stuff off the tree, hahah.

Honestly varies from year to year whether I feel like putting anything up or not since I live alone. If I'm feeling good sometime in late Nov. - early Dec. I sometimes put up outdoor lights because other people might enjoy them.

This will be our kittens' first Christmas and I already know they are going to annihilate that poor tree. I'm wondering if we should even bother decorating it.

Could always just treat it as a known cat toy and enjoy/record the destruction.

Kind of like when I realized one of my bunnies loved snow, so I made a small snowman specifically to watch her eviscerate it and laugh over and over when I replay the video. :D

my family had cats and we would hang the fragile ornaments up higher and the sturdy wooden ones lower so they (and the dogs) wouldn't knock the fragile ones down.

To be fair I am the "oh, look, it's already the 25th ... another year no decoration" and reminisce and miss the days in which I had a family and wasn't depressed and we'd decorate the home.

This. When my wife and I had our first home, we had no money to buy a tree or do decorations. Now that we have enough money, we're too goddamned tired.

Hugs for you, nonny. Christmas always makes me a little sad nostalgic too. It's just never the same as when we were little.

Decorating is definitely a huge chore when you're depressed, too. I've had years where I've managed to throw a string of lights over a shelf and that's about it. Equally, try not to feel pressured to do any of it at all if you don't feel up to it. It's not required. Just focus on taking care of yourself. <3

same here - a combination of retail work and train strikes mean this is likely to be the seventh christmas in a row where i'll be on my own, and i'm not putting up a tree for the sake of it

Yeah, the last year my mom was alive I got a live tree because I'd always wanted one, and decorated it, and mom was home from rehab and trying to do better. Right before new years she got drunk, hit her head, and bled everywhere and grabbed the tree to keep her balance, so I have pictures of the tree and ornaments with blood on them.

I called 911 and she went to the hospital, she came home one more time, I took her in to sober up again before a doctor's appointment that was supposed to be about getting treatment for her cancers so she could get a transplant, and they told her she couldn't be treated so long as she drank. She went to another care home; kept getting kicked out for drinking.

Sometime in mid January I realized the tree was dead; I hadn't had time to take care of it. I threw out most of the ornaments and cut up the tree for firewood. Haven't decorated since.

My tradition is to put up the (rather large) tree the day after Thanksgiving, but I usually start my Christmas playlist the week before. Things could possibly get moved up a bit if I feel my mood start to tank even more. Then again, maybe I already hit that stage given I bought a little snowman three pack at Target two weeks ago.

I don't even think about doing mine until the start of December, but I get that some people are so excited for it they want to start as early as possible.

We did a lot of handmade decorations when I was little and I'm determined to try and recreate them this year. We used to make little houses out of sugar paper with cotton wool for snow on top and they were so cute! Also tiny cardboard boxes that we'd wrap to look like gifts and hang on the tree.

(Less adorable was my mother's attempt to make candy cane decorations... out of dough. We missed throwing one out one year and that thing was green when we unearthed it next year.)

I love (all the non-religious parts of) Christmas, but I still don't want anything to do with decorations or baking or Christmas music until at least the beginning of December. I genuinely don't understand how people can start ramping up at the beginning of November and somehow still have it still feel special by Christmas. Like dude, that is one sixth of the year. Good for them I guess; it's not like I wouldn't outwardly criticize someone who was squeeing about putting their decorations up this early. I do wish stores would keep the Christmas stuff off the shelves until November first, though.

Re: Early Christmas People :I

(Anonymous) 2022-11-07 01:42 am (UTC)(link)
I know that in some lines of work November is really the only time you have energy for appreciating all the Christmas stuff. I learned this when I was a mail carrier several years ago. I remember feeling the Christmas spirit only because I started seeing stuff in November. Come December, I worked minimum six days a week for ten hours a day. I was so mentally exhausted right up to Christmas Day. If I'd waited to indulge in Christmas stuff until December, I wouldn't even have remembered doing so.

Oh this so much! I don't care what other people do in their own homes, but when the shops start putting up xmas decorations the day after Halloween - I almost want to go feral and rip everything down.

Know people like that? Yeah. Tend to avoid them? Yeah.

In winter, I make the most of the long nights to write a lot.

In my country the 8th of December is a holiday so we usually start putting up our decorations that day. Also, where I live, the biggest day for children is not the 25th, but the 13th (Saint Lucy) when they receive the gifts and candies. We put decorations up like 5 days before the holidays begins for us and it's perfect timing IMHO.
We put away the decoration on the 6th of January, the last day of the winter Holiday.

That sounds like a good way to do it. Enough time to enjoy, not so much it gets messy.
