I'd find it very difficult to remain best friends with a tankie. Friends I've had who leaned that way always ended up dumping me for disagreeing with them.

OP

(Anonymous) 2022-11-09 08:21 am (UTC)(link)
so far, he's just ignored my response when i've challenged the more questionable things, and tbh, I'm happy with that. he knows I'm not a tankie, even if i'm pretty leftist and frankly i've got a significantly less abusive support system than him, so I'd rather for my own piece of mind let him dump me. I'll be fine. I don't think he will.

(Anonymous) 2022-11-09 12:07 am (UTC)(link)
I would strongly consider ending the friendship over that tbh

Unfollow and block.

My sympathies, OP. My anti-war father somehow became a Putin stan and I'm just so tired of trying to gently reason him out of it.

(Anonymous) 2022-11-09 12:37 am (UTC)(link)
My sympathies to you. That’s definitely a 180 in terms of beliefs. And I can’t imagine having to listen to someone close to you stan Putin, and know you can’t change his mind.

OP

(Anonymous) 2022-11-09 08:28 am (UTC)(link)
yeah, there's just so much irrational justification for some of these beliefs! like if you really think the west "provoked" putin and so are bad for letting Ukraine be caught in the middle....russia is also bad for that same thing. if you think rising nato membership has threatened russia...then it's also a bad idea for russia to make it more reasonable for those states, who weren't considering it very hard, to join nato because of the conflict. thankfully our texts aren't like this, and it's just instagram.

Re: OP

nayrt

Yes, seriously! And the only reason countries joining NATO could "threaten" Russia would be if Russia had wanted to invade those countries... Aargh, the whole thing drives me up the wall. And it's particularly bizarre for left-wingers to be supporting Putin, an authoritarian far-right capitalist.

(Anonymous) 2022-11-09 12:31 am (UTC)(link)
Being friends with a tankie is a lot like being friends with a QAnoner.

(Anonymous) 2022-11-09 01:04 am (UTC)(link)
Run, run screaming.

(Anonymous) 2022-11-09 01:54 am (UTC)(link)
What's a tankie?

(Anonymous) 2022-11-09 02:03 am (UTC)(link)
Historically, a 'tankie' was a Western communist who continued supporting the USSR after the violent repression of the Hungarian Revolution of 1956.

More colloquially, it's a term for anyone on the far left who supports repressive and authoritarian communist ideologies or supports left-wing dictators and authoritarian left-wing regimes and states, and who acts as an apologist for imperialism and atrocities committed by those states, or even by right-wing imperialist states which they see as aligned with long-term left-wing goals. Typically Maoists, Marxist-Leninists, Stalinists, all those types of people.

(Anonymous) 2022-11-09 06:04 am (UTC)(link)
Never heard of the term before.

(Anonymous) 2022-11-09 07:05 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, it's not necessarily that common if you're not a politics nerd but I think it's seen an uptick in use recently because of the self-described leftists who are supporting Putin in the Ukraine war.

(Anonymous) 2022-11-09 09:16 am (UTC)(link)
What would I call my friend who calls himself a communist but hates Putin and supports Ukraine?

He hasn't told me this word for word, but I think his position on the USSR and such is "Well yes, they were very bad, but so is capitalism!!!!"

(Anonymous) 2022-11-09 04:22 pm (UTC)(link)
I think the term would be "a good fella"

(Anonymous) 2022-11-09 07:14 pm (UTC)(link)
Still a tankie I'd say. Though from what I get from your description, he's not really informed about actual communism, but is just enamored with the western fairytale-communism idea.
Capitalism isn't good, but it's the way lesser of two evils. There's a very good reason Easterners have been fighting so hard to get the Soviet crimes recognized as on par with nazi crimes

Oh shit, thank you for explaining it - I was scrolling by and assuming it was someone into tanks and military things, that's much worse D:

(Anonymous) 2022-11-09 05:38 am (UTC)(link)
I thiiink you should reconsider being a friend. Or, you know, unfollow them and then tell truthfully why you did it. Maybe actually your friendship would survive it and would be better for it

OP

thank you for making secret, secret-maker.

Re: OP

(Anonymous) 2022-11-09 08:35 am (UTC)(link)
i should also say, it's unlikely I would ever drop him. I'm not saying this is just his depression, but I'm 100% sure that this is all the more attractive because of his circumstances, so saying the US/the West is doing things to make a lot of people everywhere feel terrible, makes you feeling terrible and stuck, external and not your brain.

this is just making fandom a lot less fun, so i wanted to say this somewhere, but I'm in much more of a robust situation than my friend.

Re: OP

(Anonymous) 2022-11-09 01:11 pm (UTC)(link)
Well he's right the US/the West is doing terrible things that make people feel terrible, he's just wrong in thinking that's exclusive to the West! But amongst other things, depression can be extremely isolating, and also political extremists are pretty good at taking advantage of people who are isolated and suffering, and sucking them in.

Maybe you should unfollow your friend and tell him it's because his political posts are spoiling your fandom enjoyment, and you want Insta to be a fun fandom place for you, not a political one. Then he might not take it personally.

You sound like a nice and caring person, btw. It's easy to say just dump a friend because of their horrible politics, but it's harder when you know the whole person, and also know they're suffering from depression.

(Anonymous) 2022-11-09 08:06 am (UTC)(link)
political extremism in any direction is an appropriate hill to die on.

(Anonymous) 2022-11-09 08:35 pm (UTC)(link)
I was going to comment on how I wish more social sites had a 'mute/mute for 30 days' option like facebook has; but then I saw what a tankie meant and - yikes.
