Uh, well, I completely disagree. What makes Superman who he is is that he's Smallville as a superhero. He's Clark Kent. Superman is a mask that allows him to do the superhero thing while protecting those he loves. But who he is at his core is the small town, genuinely kind and nice man.

He doesn't stop being Smallville just by being an immigrant. Thanks for confirming you've never read the story before commenting on this.

I'm commenting on the secret where the OP seems to think Clark has been held back by "trying too hard to be just Smallville" even though he doesn't have to try to be that, that's who he is. And Clark isn't held back by anything, certainly not by his small-town personality.

I don't think I'd like that particular story if that's the actual plot because I don't think that's true to who Clark is.

(Anonymous) 2022-11-12 10:19 pm (UTC)(link)
He isn't just Smallville, but Smallville is not all that he is. He is still Smallville, but Smallville and Krypton and Metropolis and the world, and that is what makes Superman Super.

(Anonymous) 2022-11-12 10:22 pm (UTC)(link)
Yes, I agree with you. I think it's important not to erase the importance of his Kryptonite heritage.

Yes, he's from Krypton. He was raised on Earth, but he is from Krypton, of course that is part of who he is. But his Smallville part is not holding him back, that's an absurd idea.

(Anonymous) 2022-11-12 10:27 pm (UTC)(link)
But trying to be only Smallville was.

[personal profile] philstar22 2022-11-12 10:29 pm (UTC)(link)
What does that even mean? What exactly were they saying was him trying to be only Smallville? His refusal to kill? His morals? What, exactly?

RTFB

NAYRT

Um, I think they're just saying embracing all elements of his heritage makes him more fully himself. I think many people of mixed heritages or nationalities can relate to that.

(Anonymous) 2022-11-12 10:37 pm (UTC)(link)
This.

[personal profile] philstar22 2022-11-12 10:38 pm (UTC)(link)
That sounds cool. But given the picture chosen for the secret, and the phrasing (holding him back sounds like he thinks he's being restrained in some way), it at least sounds like it relates to the way he's a kind person, refuses to kill, generally has moral believes that cause him to use his powers in some ways and not in others.

(Anonymous) 2022-11-12 10:41 pm (UTC)(link)
It seems more like you are trolling and trying make it into a Snyder cut thing, because that isn't what is coming across at all.

[personal profile] philstar22 2022-11-12 10:45 pm (UTC)(link)
Maybe I'm misreading the secret. To me the wording holding him back sounds like they think he's being restrained in some way. Wasn't thinking of Snyder, more thinking about general idea that floats around in the DC fandom that Superman is boring and needs to be spiced up in some way.

But if that's not what is meant, then I'm sorry, I misread.

(Anonymous) 2022-11-13 02:50 pm (UTC)(link)
I read it the same way you did, if that helps.

Contrarian Anon continues to be contrarian, agrees with trolling contrarian.

(Anonymous) 2022-11-13 06:15 pm (UTC)(link)
ffs, Phil's not a troll. She just has notoriously bad reading comprehension.

(Anonymous) 2022-11-13 07:36 pm (UTC)(link)
This. I think that Phil and the anon who read it the same way aren’t reading the secret the way OP intended. But to call them trolls over this? That’s dumb. Reading tone and intent over text can be hard for people sometimes. But some people struggle even more with it. I’m one of those people. I just didn’t read the secret the way Phil did, and disagreed with her interpretations. But that was it.

(Anonymous) 2022-11-12 10:44 pm (UTC)(link)
That's very much your interpretation, I guess. I see a picture of Superman punching a guy with a swastika on him. And tbh, I don't think of small-town values when I think of anti-Nazi/KKK activity. But I do think of the fact that the creators of Superman were Jewish and were deliberately using his status as an immigrant to reflect their own experiences.

(Anonymous) 2022-11-12 11:12 pm (UTC)(link)
Not OP but I think maybe you read too much into it. It’s basically just saying that embracing both parts of his heritage makes him his best self. Trying to fit a mold for just one or the other holds him back from truly being Super.

[personal profile] philstar22 2022-11-12 11:14 pm (UTC)(link)
Okay. Willing to admit I might be misreading it. It seems like everyone else was reading it the other way, so my initial reaction was probably wrong.

(Anonymous) 2022-11-12 11:35 pm (UTC)(link)
Are you reading this as Superman in general maybe? Because this is the plot of the comic in the secret. The one where the the Chinese family is targeted by the KKK and black people help them and the Chinese people pretend not to know them so no one lumps them in with the black people. And Clark Kent has a total identity crisis of Smallville vs Krypton.
