If it makes you feel any better, OP, I think I would have back-buttoned out of a fic that did one tenth of what you're describing. So fast. Moralizing, even in the form of Popular Characters Modeling Approved Behavior, is an utter deal-breaker for me. The story can justify what it's doing however it likes, and far be it from me to judge what another person wants to write (or why). But I will not subject myself to it.

'Moralizing, even in the form of Popular Characters Modeling Approved Behavior'

Thank you for putting a name to this dreck! CMAB - Characters Modelling Approved Behavior is now how I will be referring to this crap.

Completely agree about moralizing. I know some fic authors headcanon their fave characters in a certain way that is similar to themselves, or want the characters to model healthy behavior. But when I feel like the fic is trying to teach me something, it takes me right out of it. Also when modern kink/safer sex concepts are used in period fics.

I hate moralizing fanfic too, big time. But I don’t think there’s anything inherently moralizing about writing a ship to be as loving and mutually nourishing as possible. I think that’s just what some people like.

I definitely respect that it’s not everybody’s thing, though. I mean, I generally want my ships to be loving and mutually nourishing as an endgame goal they’re moving towards, but I still have a point where it stops being gratifying and starts being boring or cloying to me.

'mutually nourishing'

Actually threw up in my mouth a bit.

And that's fair! Nobody is saying you have to be into that. But it, in and of itself, is just a description of a dynamic. If you see it and your knee-jerk reaction is to assume that person is moralizing, that's on you.

I don't like domestic ship dynamics. I also live in a world that tends to want people--especially women--to embrace domestic living situations and habits. But that doesn't mean someone is moralizing when they say they love their ships to be super domestic. It's just what they like. Presuming otherwise is super condescending and honestly kind of rude.

Not into shared cannibalism kink?
