This is a problem with so many kinds of Internet content these days: totally shallow and surface-level, with no interesting analysis or commentary

It really depends on the fandom. Some fandoms have really great analysis and commentary mixed in with the shippy and cracky stuff.

That's definitely true. But I'm thinking of social media content as much as fandom per se - it just feels like this is true all over the place, frankly. No one ever wants to dig deep and get really meaty, they just want to repeat the same obvious easy stuff over and over.

Well, the Tolkien fandom definitely does, at least on Tumblr. There is plenty of crack and shippy stuff, but there is also lots of meta too.
