The thing about an autism diagnosis is that it's an spectrum SO WIDE it's hard to make an "autistic character" and not just "autistic coded" because that implies someone actually diagnosed them, somehow. And writes, generally, are not doctors. The best they can do is write from experience, or similarly to a close autistic person and even so it's risky.

Being diagnosed as autistic and quite impaired myself I realize that most "functioning" autistic people are NOT this impaired and if I had to write an autistic character based on my life experiences they would probably say it's bad representation because "most autistic people aren't that impaired!!" and whatnot. While I have no intellectual disability whatsoever, and nowadays can even pass for a well-functioning adult (for a maximum of 3 days which is why I can't keep a normal job anyway) it was VERY impairing in my childhood. So, an outsider can look at me and say "oh yeah, they have very mild ASD / Aspie at best!" and assume I am like the others but my private experiences are NOT like theirs. On the other hand recently I have talked to some people (my best friend included) who have claimed to be autistic or seeking an official diagnosis who are nothing like me (and would probably have bullied me for it in school anyway).

So, in short, it's a spectrum and a very wide one at that. Which is why it needs more research to nail down the differences and offer better support for people. But also, don't go assuming bad faith just because an autistic character or person is not like YOUR autism really.

Oh lol I used to do this too like I'd see someone's headcanoning a character as autistic and be like, but they're so normal. Unusually, exceptionally normal and reasonable, even.

I have since been diagnosed.
