This is a problem with so many kinds of Internet content these days: totally shallow and surface-level, with no interesting analysis or commentary

It really depends on the fandom. Some fandoms have really great analysis and commentary mixed in with the shippy and cracky stuff.

That's definitely true. But I'm thinking of social media content as much as fandom per se - it just feels like this is true all over the place, frankly. No one ever wants to dig deep and get really meaty, they just want to repeat the same obvious easy stuff over and over.

DA

Recs for fandoms where people still meta? Because I would like to see more of this.

Well, the Tolkien fandom definitely does, at least on Tumblr. There is plenty of crack and shippy stuff, but there is also lots of meta too.

Yes, it’s so frustrating! Sometimes I think I can see a glimpse of some evolution or temporal change that makes sense to me, but my knowledge is so limited and humans are so good at seeing non-existent patterns/narratives that I can’t really trust it.

If you ever find a good version of this type of video, please do share!

The only one I've ever found is this one
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BNH2pKfvyPQ
about The Legend of Zelda overworld themes.

The same creator also made this one
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KUtMsDq0ZL0
which isn't quite it since it's about the music of one single game (Civ6), but it fits in spirit.

It's almost as if most content is made by people with no actual insight to offer. Hmmm.

(Anonymous) 2022-12-07 04:30 am (UTC)(link)
But why? Why?

(Anonymous) 2022-12-07 10:15 am (UTC)(link)
Because that's what people do these days. Vomit out shallow meaningless crap all over the Internet.

Can’t recommend enough Reginal D Hunter’s Songs Of The South. Gorgeous looking show that goes chronologically as well as geographically, showing how genres emerged from one another in their particular social contexts in response to slavery, immigration, the Great Depression, all that stuff. Fab piece of documentary.
