I mean, I'm violently rolling my eyes at this person's DNI bullshit. With that said, this person isn't mad that shippers are mistaking their art for shippy art; they're mad that shippers are enjoying their art in a shippy way.

It's dumb that they're letting it bother them, and it's weird and egotistical that they're trying to control other people in this way when they have no authority to do so. But their assumption that a lot of A/B shippers who enjoy their A&B art are enjoying it in a shippy way is almost certainly correct. Doesn't make their response any less BS though.

But, like, what IS a shippy way?

When I like art I don't go "ohh yes they'll be fucking in 3 seconds .." I just go "oh. Pretty art. Nice feeling" and hit reblog.

As someone who enjoys both platonic and romantic Kaeluc works, this is how it works for me at least. Honestly I am no incest apologist, and if someone is all "I know what you are..." and asks me to not interact I will ignore that and keep doing my thing.

Endorsed. I like Frozen fanart where Anna and Elsa are hugging, and I also like art where they’re kissing. When I see art of them hugging, I don’t automatically think of them kissing.

AYRT - I mean, I wouldn't say my exact thought is, "they'll be fucking in 3 seconds," but I definitely have a sort of "nngghh yes I love them togetherrr" reaction to fanart of characters I ship, and it is a distinctly shippy reaction. It's a distinction I have a lot of personal experience with, because as a Starker shipper, a lot of my favorite art was created as Irondad art, and when I look at it I'm often aware that the artist meant it as Irondad art, while simultaneously I'm like, "Yeah, this art does not give me platonic feelings AT ALL." Or there will be other times, usually when the art makes Peter look really young, where I'll look at it and think, "Huh, I like this but I don't feel shippy about it."

I respect that not everyone views fanart of their ship through an actively shippy lense. But also, plenty of people do.

AYRT - Oh... I don't, at all. I tend to look at everything through the lens of canon which is why I often dislike non-canon-compliant fanworks. But if I ship a couple, as in "hmm they would be a cute couple wouldn't they?" and someone makes a fanwork that shows them in a shippy light, and I like it because it "fits" that's what shipping means to me? Sometimes I will imagine the scenario and make the fanwork myself. idk

Being ace and potentially a confused aro maybe it's just *my* way of seeing things though

DA

This. And I have to admit that "I see them one way and you interpret them another way, so don't come near anything I make!" seems really presumptuous and unreasonable to me. Particularly when I run into people like that who are also huffy about not having more followers or getting whatever they would consider to be "enough" recognition. But all of it makes me appreciate the fanartists who make unapologetic free porn so much, because they emphatically aren't obsessed with trying to control what people are thinking when they engage. You fapped to my work? Fantastic. You're more into the nice sunset and think their outfits are cute? Cool. That's the acceptance I like to be around. Many of those artists also make landscapes and character studies and everything else, so ... I found most of my faves through their explicit drawings. And haven't had to endure the "no impure thoughts!!" contingent, since.
