I am also not giving them any money via clicks or views - I would watch via pirate sites but the time zones mean all matches are in the middle of the night for me, so I just read about it on a news site instead. I think that's a pretty reasonable compromise?

Oh, and never go to Qatar, I think everyone's on board with that one. This is Qatar trying to whitewash its reputation and become a tourist destination, and I really think that side of it has flopped.

(Anonymous) 2022-12-07 11:25 pm (UTC)(link)
Yep. Pretty much. This is absolutely a bridge too far.

Still watching the games but I'll be damned if I pay for them.

(Anonymous) 2022-12-08 12:05 am (UTC)(link)
Bold of you to think that Qatar has been trying to "whitewash" anything. They're being unapologetically "bzns as usual" to the detriment of their international reputation even. Would be nice if they were trying to pretend they're not that bad. But FIFA has to make political choices and violent countries are still countries. And international politics is a lot deeper than "let's cancel that country because I don't agree with its politics".

Having said this, the World Cup has been fun so far! The "name of the BL?" exchange in particular is my favorite so far.

(Anonymous) 2022-12-08 12:32 am (UTC)(link)
One, I think wanting host countries to be able to meet reasonable standards of building stadiums without relying on highly exploited hostage labor in unsafe conditions, and being able to ensure the safety of fans who visit the country regardless of things like race or sexual orientation, is not a particularly political standard

And two, I am pretty sure that the Qataris themselves and their defenders largely would not agree with the idea that we should not prevent countries from hosting over political disagreements

(Anonymous) 2022-12-08 12:56 am (UTC)(link)
You're right about that, FIFA should have called it quits once they realized how many of their rules the event would break but it was probably not comercially/politically viable. Rules are rules. Then again, should they just keep hosting the event in European countries in order to "ensure safety"?

Frankly the second take is just asking for war though.

(Anonymous) 2022-12-08 01:05 am (UTC)(link)
Part of the problem is certainly that hosting a World Cup is unnecessarily onerous because of FIFA's stupid requirements and corruption. And some of the construction and hosting requirements should probably be relaxed (I also think that the move to multiple countries hosting together probably helps). But it's a huge strawman to say that anyone is arguing that it should only be held in Europe.

Frankly the second take is just asking for war though.

Not sure what you mean.

(Anonymous) 2022-12-08 01:25 am (UTC)(link)
Agreed. Not sure about *multiple* countries but if it's something like the 2002 World Cup then probably yes? Sorry about that, maybe I assumed because I heard that before and those people don't seem to consider that a lot of strong teams (and players, obviously) in fact come from violent countries.

Any take like "the Qataris themselves..." "would largely..." "they're problematic..." is a gross generalization and probably counterproductive. But I agree with everything else.

DA

Multiple countries is exactly what they've announced for 2026. It certainly seems like the pushback has made them take *some* notes.

It was clear since their Brzilian fiasco. The people there protested but they didn't care. It's also places a huge load on economy. Would be much better to have it in different stadions across the world. Otherwise it's just like Brazil. One time spending spree, new hotels, corruption, placing a load on already strained economy, right down the drain.
I'm also sure that people at the helm recieved enough bribes that they don't care about OP's actions.

It's grotesque, though I was thrilled to see that short clip of the Iranian team refusing to sing their national anthem. I hope those players go home and are safe.

All but the first winning bid of this century were proven to be corrupt. And even the Germany one probably was, they just don’t have a huge digital trail proving it.

Every time this comes up on FS I think at least half the people don’t know that everyone from FIFA involved in these bids is lone gone from the organisation. I don’t know that it’s gotten better but there’s great potential for it since Russia and Qatar were so highly publicised plus Sepp Blatter being so massively disgraced.

I think they could have changed Russia but maybe not by the time they realised they should. They absolutely SHOULD have changed Qatar even before those poor people were killed. Their blood is on FIFA’s hands.

Brazilia.

(Anonymous) 2022-12-08 07:02 am (UTC)(link)
I suspect that the new folks are probably just as corrupt.

(Anonymous) 2022-12-08 11:07 pm (UTC)(link)
didn't germany host in 2006 because of, of all things, a parody of corruption (some satirical magazine offered one of the south africa voters a bribe of random shit like cuckoo clocks and ham, and he got confused and abstained so germany won the vote 12-11 - sepp blatter was so pissed off he rigged it for south africa next time out)

at least two of the voters for those bids still sit on the fifa council

there was a comment in the papers in england (who bid for 2018) at the time that the inquest as to what went wrong with the bid should have started as soon as they announced russia... and stopped as soon as they announced qatar ten minutes later, because at that point it was transparently obvious what was going on

Honestly, any big sports event in the past(ish) decade makes me recoil because they're all shady and they do so much damage. Not just in the sports industry but local communities these big world events are the ones who pay the price especially. Amazing we can bring people together in the name of sports, but at the same time, these organizations that run these events are selfish and exploitative.

I still watch it on Fox/FS1 though. It is the beautiful game afterall :') I feel terrible knowing the human rights violations that went into this event, see rapists being lauded as heroes for scoring goals, know that locals and marginalized folks in Qatar are fighting for their very lives as we enjoy the games....I'm just another cog in the murder machine :'(

(Anonymous) 2022-12-08 03:45 pm (UTC)(link)
True, true. Then again "I'm just another cog in the murder machine" could be said about many things in life and the entertainment industry in general unfortunately.

1100 workers demanding wage increases and remote work policies are striking for twenty-four hours (from midnight Dec. 8, 2022 to 12:01 a.m. on Dec. 9, 2022) at the N.Y. Times so they're asking everyone not to play Wordle or any other games or read the paper at the website. I'm suffering Wordle withdrawals already.

(Anonymous) 2022-12-08 11:20 am (UTC)(link)
I'm not watching a single match this WC... and so far, I find it's actually impacted my life relatively little. It's the dead of winter here so the WC spirit seems nonexistent on the ground, which is definitely not the case for summer tournaments as even regional competitions get a lot of attention here.

On the other hand, I'm making active plans to get tickets for 2026. I live on the other side of the world so this represents a significant investment but I love football, always have, and I'm happy to rep the sport when the organization details don't make me lose faith in humanity.

(Anonymous) 2022-12-08 04:40 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, I'm skipping it, doesn't even feel like a World Cup year. Occasionally I see a photo or gif on tumblr but I am not following the coverage.

Good luck for 2026!

(Anonymous) 2022-12-08 05:37 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah the fact that it had to be moved to winter should have been enough on its own to stop them from going to Qatar

(Anonymous) 2022-12-08 11:09 pm (UTC)(link)
the fact that they flexed it after they'd already said "yes, it'll be a summer world cup" should have stopped it dead in its tracks immediately, because at that point the bid that won the decision in the first place was rendered a lie

(Anonymous) 2022-12-08 01:18 pm (UTC)(link)
For me it's quiet easy to not watch the world cup, because I hate soccer.

(Anonymous) 2022-12-08 04:33 pm (UTC)(link)
I hate pretty much all sports, so I get ya.

(Anonymous) 2022-12-09 03:52 am (UTC)(link)
And now the Qatar soccer president has commented, when asked about the death of migrant worker doing work on the Saudi training accommodation, that dying at work is just a fact of life, like dying in your sleep. No value on human life at all.
