Bold of you to think that Qatar has been trying to "whitewash" anything. They're being unapologetically "bzns as usual" to the detriment of their international reputation even. Would be nice if they were trying to pretend they're not that bad. But FIFA has to make political choices and violent countries are still countries. And international politics is a lot deeper than "let's cancel that country because I don't agree with its politics".

Having said this, the World Cup has been fun so far! The "name of the BL?" exchange in particular is my favorite so far.

One, I think wanting host countries to be able to meet reasonable standards of building stadiums without relying on highly exploited hostage labor in unsafe conditions, and being able to ensure the safety of fans who visit the country regardless of things like race or sexual orientation, is not a particularly political standard

And two, I am pretty sure that the Qataris themselves and their defenders largely would not agree with the idea that we should not prevent countries from hosting over political disagreements

You're right about that, FIFA should have called it quits once they realized how many of their rules the event would break but it was probably not comercially/politically viable. Rules are rules. Then again, should they just keep hosting the event in European countries in order to "ensure safety"?

Frankly the second take is just asking for war though.

Part of the problem is certainly that hosting a World Cup is unnecessarily onerous because of FIFA's stupid requirements and corruption. And some of the construction and hosting requirements should probably be relaxed (I also think that the move to multiple countries hosting together probably helps). But it's a huge strawman to say that anyone is arguing that it should only be held in Europe.

Frankly the second take is just asking for war though.

Not sure what you mean.

Agreed. Not sure about *multiple* countries but if it's something like the 2002 World Cup then probably yes? Sorry about that, maybe I assumed because I heard that before and those people don't seem to consider that a lot of strong teams (and players, obviously) in fact come from violent countries.

Any take like "the Qataris themselves..." "would largely..." "they're problematic..." is a gross generalization and probably counterproductive. But I agree with everything else.

DA

Multiple countries is exactly what they've announced for 2026. It certainly seems like the pushback has made them take *some* notes.

Again, not sure if *multiple* countries is going to be for the best. But yeah.
