I don't know about you, but Dad was Santa at my house.

(Anonymous) 2022-12-10 11:38 pm (UTC)(link)
Santa Baby is at least subtextually about wanting to bang Santa

(Anonymous) 2022-12-10 11:50 pm (UTC)(link)
Technically, the original and most of the covers are about how much ""Santa"" owes his sugar baby for being such a good girl for him all year, and the implication is that they're already banging on the regular.

Michael Buble might subtextually want to bang the literal Santa Claus.

TSwift doesn't want to bang anyone. She just wants her damn yacht.

Sure, but that's not really what the song is about. In the song, Santa is more, you know, Sugar Daddy.

(Anonymous) 2022-12-10 11:34 pm (UTC)(link)
Well, I didn't know this even existed. Now to scrub this knowledge out of my brain....

I refuse to believe this. No I will not listen to either to confirm.

(Anonymous) 2022-12-10 11:43 pm (UTC)(link)
Same here.

I just went to listen to it and I didn't realize it was from 2007.

So, very early Taylor. Country pop Taylor. Nashville Taylor.

"Buddy", yes, sure, Buble, you've fooling nobody.

(Anonymous) 2022-12-11 12:01 am (UTC)(link)
Sometimes I think I'd like hear a openly gay version called "Santa Daddy".

Now I’m having a flashback to “I Saw Daddy Kissing Santa Claus.” (Which wasn’t technically gay but was kind of messed up.)

Omg yes, I DEFINITELY would like to hear this version.

(Anonymous) 2022-12-11 02:32 am (UTC)(link)
I saw a comment somewhere about wanting Lil Nas X to cover it and honestly I think he would be perfect, he would absolutely give it the proper level of sexual innuendo.

oh, I really wanna hear this now and I'm friends with some members of a gay chorus!

Well, she was 15 at the time.

(Anonymous) 2022-12-11 12:02 am (UTC)(link)
So, maybe it was intended that way, just a straight up request for lots of expensive things.

Re: Well, she was 15 at the time.

(Anonymous) 2022-12-11 12:05 am (UTC)(link)
17, not 15, according to Wikipedia. Not that it changes the point really.

I just chalk it up to the fact she was 17 when it was recorded.

Anon above says she was 15 even. My point still stands.

She was younger than that when she recorded "Should've Said No." Although I suppose she could have been really, really mad that her boyfriend went home with another girl and bought her a convertible.

(Anonymous) 2022-12-11 12:40 am (UTC)(link)
Santa Baby is supposed to be horny so idk what possessed her to cover it at 17.

Ok, I have read the respective lyrics (I forgot exactly how Buble changed the lyrics) and Buble starts with baby and eventually calls Santa "poppy"/"papi" which is essentially daddy, so you're right OP. you're right and I was wrong. There's simply no amount of "pally"s and "buddy"s and making this transaction purely financial instead of marriage minded that erases the fact that he calls Santa daddy. iirc he's also using typical jazz singing. Automatically Buble's is sexier. You're correct.

(Anonymous) 2022-12-11 02:05 am (UTC)(link)
Yup, it is profoundly sexless and completely negates everything fun and interesting about the song. But Taylor was seventeen at the time, and a country star at that. Not sure what else you'd expect. If the argument is that she was extremely ill-suited to cover it and therefore it's silly that she did...yeah, I'll support that. But again, at the time she was seventeen and a breakout country star with one album to her name. Yes she has a reputation for calling the shots when it comes to her career, but I doubt she was out there digging her heels in when her label asked her to do a Christmas covers album and that songs was in the line-up. It's innocuous, the label wants it, and there's money to be made; why fight it?

(Anonymous) 2022-12-11 02:22 am (UTC)(link)
She was definitely profoundly ill-suited to cover the song, but not because of her age (she'd been singing somebody done somebody wrong songs for a couple of years at that point) or her genre (female country artists have been embracing sexual innuendo since at least the '60s). It's not a good style of song for her, specifically, and she's never been good at covers anyway. She's a talented singer-songwriter, but she doesn't do well with other people's words.

the only version of this song I really like is the one RuPaul did, it's funny!

(Anonymous) 2022-12-11 05:33 am (UTC)(link)
When I think of this song, I think of the Miss Piggy version.
