I like both... but I do wish my current fandom wasn't so bad about feminizing a character who's really NOT physically small-- he's the second most physically imposing character, moreso than the other half of the ship, just as tall but broader and hairier and more muscular etc... which is why I find him interesting as an omega (that and the way their personalities mesh)-- I LOVE that he's a buff, masc guy who wants to be dominated and bred by his doe-eyed softboy alpha, I don't want to read about two guys with their names who don't fit their physical descriptions.

It's not just feminizing the omega, it's making the alpha tall, giving him abs when he's physically strong but very wiry arms with a soft middle, claiming his hands are big when we've SEEN his hands and they're NOT... like, let him look unimposing! Let his alpha-ness come as a surprise based on his looks, let there be a non-traditional element!

Don't know which fandom you're in, but I'm always happy to have more straight-up D/s content in my fandoms, so I empathize.

I wish that D/s AUs were still around in general. It seems like only ABO is left of what I considered the big three kink AUs: ABO, D/s and Master/slave. Seems like the last two were absorbed by/forgotten in favour of ABO.

D/s has always been the closest to hitting my kink buttons, I'm sad it's not really a thing anymore (at least in my fandoms).

You’ve got these people who are part animal and part human, and it’s considered normal for humans to own them as pets, but also to have sex with them. I think it may have evolved out of sexualized Pokemon AUs.

Yeah, I occasionally enjoy Master/slave too, but they're also vanishingly rare. If only I had the ability to write 10 fics a day, I would flood my fandoms tag with D/s and M/s AUs. :(

There's plenty of stuff that's common in ABO that I don't like (gender essentialism, for one).

However, finding D/s AU fics that work for me has always been more of a struggle, because generally the sub really does need to submit, and I hate that. What makes ABO work for me is that, in the ABO fics I enjoy, the Omega isn't controlled by their biology. They aren't weak or soft or submissive, regardless of what the world might think, and they have suppressants they can take when they don't want to experience their heats. Whereas with the D/s AUs I've read, the sub needs to sub, or they fail to thrive. It doesn't matter whether they want to; they need to. Also, in most of the D/s AUs I've read, a strong Dom can make a sub obey, regardless of what the sub wants. Which makes me absolutely enraged on behalf of the sub.

I'm open to D/s AUs, but I almost never find ones that work for me, because in order for me to enjoy them the sub needs to be able to override any Dom who tries to mess with them, and only sub if and when they choose to.

And it is never the other way around either. The dom never has the same need to dom, at least not to the same level.

Personally I have a bunch of ideas for D/s AUs that go further than just "Dom is Dom and sub is sub", some of which explore the things you like about A/B/O. The kinky sex is great but I also really want to go into the social and cultural side of it--what does consent mean in the context of a D/s AU, how does X character deal with the fact that he hates being sexually submissive but needs it, what happens when a Dom or sub doesn't get what they need sexually (do they get ill? and if so, what do governments do to make sure everyone can get laid the way they're supposed to?), what happens when there are too many subs for the number of Doms, or too many Doms for the number of subs in the population, what happens when the government makes suppressants illegal because it's "unnatural" (probably a very pertinent analogy you could make with that one)...agh, I have so many ideas and so little time to write them all. :(

I'm sure these are all/mostly fairly commonly explored in A/B/O fic, but I just don't trust any A/B/O fic to not spring m-preg, knotting and feminization on me because that's just...part of the genre, I guess.
