Why does the squickiest porn seem to have the most engaging story? This is the third time I've wound up attached to the plot and characters of something I only clicked on because my fandom is tiny and content is content. This one is so horrifying — when it's supposed to be — that I don't even dare bookmark it. And yet I want so much more of it.

Is it fetish porn? Part of what might make it good is because a lot of fetishists are *very* passionate about their fetish - you may be picking up on their enthusiasm for the subject matter through their writing. There's a degree of skill involved with writing convincing fetish material too; if you can write decent porn, chances are you can write decent plot.

Ty for putting this into words! I've been reading fetish stuff exclusively the past year, and honestly I do get impressed sometimes with the writing in them. I believe fetish writing requires a lot more description about the vibes, the feelings involved, and the conflict between mind and body. I think a lot of fetish authors also realize that their fetish involves horror and drama elements as well, so they get better at writing those themes too. At least it has in my own experience.

I once read an entire original soft vore story because the writing was just that good. It wasn’t horrifying content but it was way out of my usual comfort area.

I've read some age-play stuff that was just that good. It's got me thinking, am I into this? No. I'm not. But when a fic is firing on all cylinders I'm enthralled.
