"my kids won't be princes/princesses because I'm black!"
I... don't think that is something she ever said? You might have been conflating multiple complaints and issues Meghan had with the BRF into one issue.

Issue #1: A member of the royal family expressed concerns about whether Meghan and Harry's children would come out looking black -- this is a racist AF thing to say and utterly unacceptable no matter what the circumstances.

Issue #2: She requested protection that is normally awarded to princes/princesses be awarded to her child when it was born because she was already having issues with the hostile/obsessed tabloid press and was scared about how they would act around her child. She knew this was not normally done because her children would not be counted as princes/princesses until the monarch position passes down another generation (?), but she was asking for a special exception because of her situation and the press's attitude toward her. Her request was denied.

The issue was never at any point "my kids won't be princes/princesses because I'm black!" It was a bunch of issues including (1) the racism of individual members of the royal family, (2) the racism of the press, and (3) the refusal of the royal family to acknowledge in any way that the treatment and harassment that Meghan was receiving WAS exceptional partly because the British media is racist as fuck and obsessed with her in the creepiest way possible. (Sorry if I've gotten anything regarding BRF protocol wrong, but I am an American living in the UK, and I have seen the ridiculous way the press treated Meghan Markle here, and I did watch the full Oprah interview. At no point did Meghan claim it was racist that they wouldn't break tradition for her. But it WAS part of a pattern of the royal family refusing to protect her from the exceptional hostility of the media, and the media IS absolutely racist and creepy toward her. I don't think the latter fact is controversial. Also, I don't even think her whole point in the interview was that the BRF was bad, just that they have a toxic relationship to the press where they are basically hostages to the press in a lot of ways, and she ended up having to bear the brunt of that toxicity because she was the press's personal scapegoat for a while.)

A quote from her Oprah interview:

'The idea that the first member of color in this family not being titled in the same way that other grandchildren would be." '

Even though it had been explained to her that the convention was for the monarch's grandchildren to be given those titles, not their great grandchildren. Williams kids were made exceptions because they were in the direct line of succession. And lo and behold, when Charles became King he gave both of M+H's kids titles. Like they had been told would happen. MM is a piece of work.

Pondering what colour the kids skin would be is very different to 'having concerns'. Tactless and off note but not intentionally malicious.

It can be not intentionally malicious and still be racist. Also, context is such a heavy thing. No one should be asking a pregnant woman what color her kids will be because a) it can't be changed anyway and b) it carries social repercussions in a way other things that could be speculated about (such as eye color) does not.

Like, being clueless/not thinking doesn't excuse racism. If something is stated thoughtlessly, it means you apologize and do better in the future. If it keeps happening, it means you have a problem. And there is a goddamn tapestry of context to this that makes it a problem.

There really isn't.

I imagine most mixed-race families wonder how the kids will turn out. Hell, even non-mixed ones wonder who the kid will take after most. Not racist at all.

AYRT, Well, you would be wrong, because she did say that. Just not in those exact words, as the anon above me pointed out. But she definitely made it seem to the audience as if her kids wouldn't get titles because they were POC. They doubled down on it with a cut to Oprah looking appropriately shocked.

I honestly don't know how you could have missed it, because it was the snipped that was shown in all the promo's around here. Along with the bit about them wondering about the color of the baby's skin.
