What are you *really* reading these days?

(Anonymous) 2022-12-23 12:12 am (UTC)(link)
Because a relative asked me recently if I’ve read anything interesting, and I had to lie because “political RPF, My Immortal sequels, and Pac-Man fanfic” wouldn’t have gone over well.

"They Drown our Daughters," Wednesday fanfic, and a Chuck Tingle novel called "Petrichor Is A Lesbian And She Gets Me Off In A Cozy Way During A Much Needed Rainstorm."

...Wow that is embarrassing.

Crowned With Sapphires. https://archiveofourown.org/works/30352008/chapters/74823102 A sequel to a longer Jaime/Brienne fic.

I'm not reading any books because they are all on hold. :(

In These Times by Jenny Uglow, and that Ladyhawke novelization that got brought up on FS recently.

The usual. Outside of stuff I have to read for work, mostly just humor websites and Middle Earth or MCU porn.

A YA novel This Wicked Fate by Kalynn Bayron, X-Men comics in a companions collection from the library and a semi-RPF fanfic who's shipped with a character and in a yandere coffee shop AU.

If the book conversation comes up I pretend that I'm still reading Tove Jansson's biography.

I read Newtown: An American Tragedy, a book about Sandy Hook, by Matthew Lysiak. It was published about a year afterwards. It was interesting but harrowing to read about. Lysiak, a journalist, seems to present a pretty comprehensive and balanced view. But it's really disheartening that not much has changed since then.

Not much because all the in-progress fics I was reading suddenly stopped updating.

So uh. Rereading my own in-progress fic to make edits before posting, if that counts. :P

No fandom fetish porn. It's easy to find and jump into for my adhd-self. Little too arousing though.

Almost nothing. Even my stash of Brookings pieces is untouched because my schedule is a mess until the 27th.

LOL! Out of curiosity, what did you tell your relative you'd read?

I never read fiction anymore. The nonfiction I read is mostly specific to work/school. I go on biography binges from time to time.

Is it just me, or does that question always feel a little snooty in a conversation? It always makes me wanna say something like, "Oh, War and Peace, know you, just a little light reading, but I haven't finished it yet so no spoilers, please!"

Fanfic. And re-reading old favorites, like I do. Watership Down, Mona Lisa Overdrive, The Expanse series, Flambards.

My brother got me a copy of 101 Dalmatians/The Starlight Bark, and wow, so weird. :D

Five books - Boy Underground by Catherine Ryan Hyde, The Apocalypse of Elena Mendoza by Shaun David Hutchinson, Lost in the Jungle by Yossi Ghinsberg, What Moves the Dead by T. Kingfisher and A Flicker in the Dark by Stacy Willingham.

I've read some actor RPF semi-recently but haven't read one in a bit...it's from a somewhat obscure show so there's not much. I wish there was political RPF of people I'm actually interested in! The last time I checked, it was all fairly boring stuff about politicians and their spouses, or completely insane stuff like Trump/Putin which I have zero interest in and kind of scares me lol.

I've just read The People in the Trees, getting ready to read Thomas Mann's Doctor Faustus and then Never Mind by Edward St. Aubyn. And then back to Mann for Buddenbrooks. :D

A very long kawoshin fanfiction ( https://archiveofourown.org/series/3020385 ), BILLIE SCOTT by Zoe Thorogood (started yesterday, finishing today), Grasshopper by Isaka Kotaro (very funny, but I can't seem to continue it after a certain point) and on my phone I have Steal like and Artist by Austin Kleon.

If I was asked the same question as you I'd go with Grasshopper. When I'm not reading anything but fanfics or manga I just go with the stardard "OH YOU KNOW, short stories/indie books published by independent authours" or just go with a random book I've read before LMAO
