As someone who has done some crowdsurfing (I'm short and under 100 pounds, I've had friends of mine just pick me up and throw me at the pit in hopes someone will catch me)... not everyone is expecting a crowdsurfer and may not hold up whatever part passes over them, thus a leg may slip down. Or more.

One of the most amusing experiences I've ever had at a concert was a TMBG show, so while there was a mosh pit (that reeked of pot), everyone was very happy and friendly. So when inevitably someone underneath didn't see me coming and I started to fall, everyone else was like "OH NO!" and tried to catch me, so I kind of ... slowly sank down through the crowded sea of people, and they all turned to me like "omg we dropped you we're so sorry are you okay?!" and offered a hand at once so I wouldn't get stepped on. :D

But yeah, that is a little too much crowd for me when I'm not ABOVE it, so as soon as I was down, I always backed off.
