This isn't a secret, so I'll put it here. I find the the Lord of the Rings movies to be hideously boring. I don't know why I made myself sit through them.

I liked the books and did not find them boring!

My mom has always been a MASSIVE LoTR fan. When the movies came out, she made me go see them with her in the theatre. I fell asleep during a fight scene, woke up about an hour later during another fight scene. I know she had hoped that I would love those books too, but man, they're so goddamned boring and so are the movies.

I sat through the first one though I took a break in the middle just to get some air. Was bored, didn't bother with the other two.

I think I only finished the books because I had to read them for my English class. They weren't boring to me but they weren't exciting either. Though this was almost 40 years ago so I don't remember them that well. I think high fantasy just isn't my thing.

I didn't make myself. I read the Hobbit as a third grader and tried the first of the live action LOTR movies when they came out, and then was like "I'm not doing this any more. No matter how fandom raves over this story."

And I really haven't felt like I'm missing a thing. I think I also saw one of the animated cartoons where the Hobbits take the ring to Mordor, as a kid. It just ... none of it made any impression on me whatsoever. I don't tend to say that because the people who are into it act like it lights up their life in some dramatic way. I wouldn't want to mess with that, even if I don't understand it. But I do miss when there were more active single-fandom spaces, because invariably, in a panfandom space, I wind up making my way *past* a lot of Tolkien content that I couldn't care less about.

I almost walked out of Fellowship - had I not been there with 10 other people dressed as characters (and photographed for the newspaper) I would have. Never bothered to see the rest because I knew it was going to be more of the same - Peter Jackon's stupid concept "oh I love LOTR here's my entirely batshit interpretation that I'm going to pass off as lovingly accurate" he can fuck off forever for turning Bree into one of his horror flicks and I never forgave him for anything that came afterward.
