Back when I watched more anime (because I had more time to do it) I noticed that many anime fans seem to give good reviews to pretty much anything, at least on some sites. If nearly everything is getting 95% great reviews it’s hard to tell whether any of it’s any good or not. (The one exception seems to be School Days, which got reviews like “You want something better to do with your time than watch this anime? Eat a sock.”)

There is a level of general mediocrity with really popular anime franchises, or at least there was. I’m not a big fan of Demon Slayer or Jujutsu Kaisen, but I don’t they’re bad at all. And I think Chainsaw Man is really good! But really popular anime of yesteryear, but especially in the 2000s and 2010s, were definitely not that great compared to less popular anime. I’m specifically thinking of Naruto, Bleach, Inuyasha, Fairy Tail, and Sword Art Online. I like(d) the first 4 still, but I also thought they were overrated. I would have also listed One Piece, but fans of One apiece scare me.
