This. Also, having read the old testament, like 80% of it is toxic/hateful/psychotic shit being explicitly touted by the text as Good and Moral. There are a few things in there that are actually legit ethical advice, but they're honestly pretty few and far between, and almost all of it is so overwhelmingly obvious that it's borderline intuitive. Like, fucking Bonobos have most of it figured out; having a book to preachsplain those parts to us was really, really unnecessary.

Given that the old testament is the basis of Jewish religious texts, I'd cool it there.

Da

I don’t really think it’s antisemitic to think the Old Testament was kind of fucked up sometimes. We’ve already established that organized religion as a whole has messed up shit at times, while also having good messages too. And the Old Testament vs. New Testament have many differences, and it feels like some of the more harsh elements of the OT and it’s version of god feel like they were purposely softened in the NT. As well as blatantly trying to make the NT read as less Jewish, which is dumb considering the Bible is still just as much a Jewish book in origin as the Torah, no matter if you stamp “New” on it. Judaism is an important part of the Bible, Jesus was himself Jewish, but the Christians tried anyways. And the NT is pretty fucked up at times too, so they don’t get to pretend otherwise, or that they’re better in any way.

I honestly think they’re far worse than pretty much every other organized religion, even though I have nothing against Christianity itself. I think I might still be a Christian when it comes to belief in god. But I never go to church, and I can’t stand being around most other Christians. I’m just lucky enough to have family that are both Christian and non-preachy, and aren’t raging bigots. My mother’s side are pretty left-wing, especially when it comes to acceptance of LGBTQ+, aren’t racist. Low bar, I know. But a lot don’t cross it, so. If I didn’t have that kind of family growing up, I think I would have abandoned Christianity and religion as a whole a long time ago.

Maybe ayrt shouldn’t have been so adamant that it was the OT that was really fucked, instead of the Bible in general having it’s moments. And maybe them admitting there is some good ethical lessons in it means they proved themselves wrong that it mostly passes off terrible things as moral. But I don’t think they’re doing it for antisemitic reasons. Of course, I could be wrong, who knows. And I’m not Jewish, so I don’t get to actually say whether something or someone is actually acting that way from any place of authority. I can only give my take as someone not part of the religion.
