Thank you! I've consistently avoided this anime because it's like 71234567 episodes long and the art looked silly until EP. 10234, but I think I'll give it a chance. I love pirate stories, and that sense of adventure and hope is something that would be good to bring in the new year!

You'd rec the manga over the anime?

Personally, I really like the early anime and have rewatched about the first 500 episodes quite often - you might have heard that the anime has bad pacing, but that's only in the latter half. Plus, being able to binge the episodes makes it a lot easier.

I prefer the manga because the anime changed some small things to make it more TV friendly. Like, in the first chapter of the manga, we see the main character stab his own cheek as a kid in an effort to look tough. It's what gives him his iconic scar. But in the anime they not only adapted chapter 1 as a flashback in a later episode (for whatever reason), but they also left that part off until way later into the series. It doesn't matter in the long run, but that's why I prefer the manga.

Having said that, the anime has a fantastic OST and great voice acting. It's definitely worth watching, if you prefer anime over manga. I prefer the manga overall, but there are entire arcs where I prefer to watch the anime just because the music and voice acting is SO GOOD.
