I've definitely heard of it. But I think "famous within its niche" is correct. And I think secret OP is also correct insofar as that niche is specifically very comics-nerd-bro-ish (as far as I can determine from outside).

I've mostly heard of it because I've seen it get recommended a lot. And it just always comes across as the most intense example of the nerd-bro urge to constantly be asking "what if everything was really real? and really realistic??? and really DARK?!?!?!". Apparently to such an extent that I've developed a real distaste for it, lol. But just, like, what's the fucking point. I don't see the appeal of it at all and the enthusiasm for something that seems so pointless has become actively offputting at this point.
