Yep. Fingertips are incredibly sensitive, for both good and for ill. It's why touching something soft with your fingertips feels much nicer than just brushing it against the back of your arm or something.

As a smut writer, I think it plays into the whole "touch, sense, smell, taste" element of sex, as well as foreplay.

Before you fuck, you build up tension. Instead of sucking a dick, you suck the tip of the thumb. Give the receiver preview to the skills of the giver by having the giver suck on the receiver's finger(s). Passionate lovers have to heighten their lover's senses so finger sucking (giving and receiving) is a quick way to do it.

As a writer, writing the same sex stuff can get boring. Sometimes the best subtle ways of changing things up is in the foreplay. Fingers are part of the body we use often and easily.

Maybe a lot of smut writers are getting similar ideas in their smut? NGL I get a lot of inspiration from the porn I read and watch so maybe a lot of us are sorta taking notes from each other's works?

I've run across this in a few fics. One that stood out to me was where A put their fingers so far into B's mouth that they started gagging and I couldn't help thinking that B throwing up would've put a major kink into their sexytimes.

Huh, strange. I've only seen this sort of thing in movies or shows, as a way to sfw simulate forcing a dick into another person's mouth as a dominance-thing. I guess the chickens are coming home to roost if it's starting to show up in fanfic.

(Feels a little cargo cult-y to me as I've never seen this sort of thing IRL, only in professionally-produced fiction. I feel like this is a 'manufactured' and new kink like how blueberry inflation never existed before one specific movie with candy and oompa loompas.)

I've always really loved weird expressions of sexuality, so hands in mouth can work for me. I don't tend to like it when it's played as a teasing mimicking of oral sex. I prefer when it's just its own thing. A strange, intimate breaching of physical boundaries that's another layer of sexual possession or consumption between two people.

I think of the sex scene from The English Patient, where Laszlo puts his thumb in Katherine's mouth while they have sex and when he pulls away she curls with his hand in order to keep it in her mouth. Or--of all things--a bit from a Dan/Blair fanfic where she's described as putting all four of her fingers into his mouth and gripping his jaw while they're in the middle of fucking. I think I also read a fic where Sherlock asked if he could put his fingers in John's mouth, because he didn't really understand his desire to be physically intimate with John and he could conceptualize putting his fingers inside John's mouth as a kind of "scientific" exploration, and therefore acceptable.

I love stuff like that. I think having a character put their fingers in another character's mouth and be responded to with passionate enthusiasm can often evoke a kind of romantic and sexual avarice.

fingers-in-mouth used to be like... one of the STAPLES of fic sex like WHERE DID IT GO FOR SO LONG I really don't see it much anymore honestly. (even if it was just 'get me wet' or 'show me how you'd use your mouth' it was EVERYWHERE in the early 2000s iirc)
