I just had a disappointing cup of hot chocolate.

What foods/drinks didn't live up to your expectations?

Honestly, I find hot chocolate is one of those things that's always disappointing when its made at home. Somehow it just doesn't taste the same.

Oddly, I personally find pasta to be the complete opposite. I'm almost always disappointed in it when I go out to eat, but I love to make it at home.

Taste is a weird thing.

I like chai and I like chocolate. I did not like chocolate chai. Blegh.

I buy dip mixes at the christmas market I go to with my mom and sister and I make those for christmas and new year's since I don't cook but everyone seems to like these. this year I bought one called 'cool as a cucumber' for christmas and it tasted really cucumbery and fresh at the market but when I made it at home it just tasted like ranch, very boring. here's hoping the 'prime rib' one I got for new year's mixes better (I've had 'prime rib' before and it was a big hit but it wasn't from this company so idk)

Chocolate oatmeal cookies just taste like cardboard.

I also had a disappointing cup of hot chocolate. Not even a splash of Bailey's helped it.

Turkish delight. Those Narnia books had me convinced it was a take on pudding (tapioca, rice take your pick). My disappointment when I finally saw what it was. And when I finally tasted it too. I could see why people like it but it's not my type.

I guess you have to live through a war and have a tax on sweets to understand how precious even Turkish Delight can be to some people

Or maybe some people just like it and others don’t. I think Edmund would have liked it even without the war and tax, personally.

I always thought hot chocolate LOOKED delicious but it never lived up to expectations until I found out it's supposed to be made with cream and melted actual chocolate (not coco powder). Now I'm never disappointed in my own homemade hot chocolate.

That is how hot chocolate is supposed to be made, and why I like it better. But hot cocoa is still supposed to be made with cocoa powder, which is why it’s technically a different drink.

I bought some Beyond chicken nuggets. I've liked other Beyond products so I thought I would like them too, but I really didn't. Part of it may be that I cooked them in the microwave. The package said you could but maybe I shouldn't have listened.

I misread this as Beyonce and wondered when she got into processed chicken products.

The chocolate that came in my advent calendar was really not good chocolate. Somehow it was so sweet it hurt my teeth and also the texture was off.

Any time I try to get macaroni and cheese at a restaurant I'm taking a gamble. It might be amazing but 4/5 it's bland to inedible.

I dislike that there often a confusion with hot chocolate and hot cocoa. And I think USA (?) english usage of this word is often to blame.
Hot chocolate is a drink made from chocolate and it's dark and heavy sweetness. Topped with spices it's a thing I love greatly.
And hot chocolate/hot cocoa is a milky drink with cocoa powder. I am ok with it if it has no sugar, can be nice, but I HATE it with sugar. A lot of places make it with a lot of sugar and cream to top and marshmallows too and call it hot chocolate. And I really don't like this sort of drink.

I bought some frozen fish sticks a couple weeks ago, for the first time in like a decade or more. They were on the cheap end but they weren't insanely cheap so I was definitely not expecting the "fish" to be like 60% mushy, flavorless, not-fish filler. The last time I had fish sticks the fish was fish. Sure, the breading was a little thick, and the fish was all mashed up to disguise the fact that it was probably the discard scraps from bougie fish fillets or whatever--but it was still fucking fish.

I love Chinese food and I love desserts but I'm 99% of the time very disappointed in Chinese desserts. The 1% is those almond cookies.

Honestly, I prefer the majority of Eastern foods to the majority of Western foods. When I'm eating out it's almost always Thai, Indian, Middle Eastern, Japanese, Vietnamese, or Taiwanese, and even when I'm cooking at home I usually opt for recipes that are the simpler, cheaper, not-high-heat-requiring versions of those cuisines (because my stove is old and weak). But when it comes to desserts it's very much the other way around for me; Western Europe and the US is where it's at. So often with Eastern desserts I find them either blaringly sweet in a way that drowns out any other flavor notes, or not nearly sweet enough. Also they're often texturally challenging, at least for me anyway.

I don't doubt that they are perfectly delicious and satisfying to people who are accustomed to them, but for me and my Western palate it's just not usually what I'm looking for from a dessert.

I totally agree with you.
Also, in addition to Chinese I want to put in a good word for Korean food. I love Korean food.
