Re: Favorite Go-To For AU fics?

Anything where the canon is set in the mundane world and the AU involves supernatural elements. I think Vampire AUs and Special Powers AUs are probably my absolute favorites, but other supernatural elements can be good too (though I tend to avoid werewolf AUs because I'm just not into the pack dynamics and general furriness that tend to be prevalent in werewolf AUs). It's really important that the canon is set in the mundane world, though. When a fic tries to cram supernatural elements into an already fantastical world, it just tends to feel crowded/messy/jarring to me. Sometimes I can still get into it, if it's well-written, but on the whole I feel that fantastical canons are very unideal for making fantastical AUs out of.

I also love a specific (but sadly uncommon) kind of soulmates AU, where having a soulmate is actually rare, and then there's some kind of complicating factor, like they don't realize they're soulmates for a long time, or they mistakenly believe the other doesn't want them or something like that. Also, the fic needs to show me actual relationship development, and not just rely on them being soulmates to convince me it's True Love.

As far as fusions with other texts, it's hard to top Potterverse AUs for me.

And for purely smutty purposes, I favor ABO, but it's very hit and miss for me. I've learned to read the tags closely and nope out if I get squicky vibes early on.
