Favorite Go-To For AU fics?

If you like reading Alternative Universe fics, which ones are the ones you look for or wish there were more of? (or even what you prefer to write?)

it might be cliche but I really do love a good well written ‘the MC is tempted to the dark side’ fic

I'm a sucker for a soulmate AU - also like the idea of multiple soulmate bonds that can either be romantic or platonic; especially if its angsty and/or has hurt/comfort.

Also the occasional vampire or werewolf AU fic when I'm in the mood for it.

Mob/Crime Boss AUs for any fandom. But some fandoms have some specific ones I like.

I LOVE mob AUs. I'm having such a hard time with AUs in my current fandom because it's mob canon. (No, I don't want an AU where the canonical mob boss runs a coffee shop; I LIKE it when he shoots people in the head for disrespect!)

It pairs well with my love of sugar daddy stories.

Anything where the canon is set in the mundane world and the AU involves supernatural elements. I think Vampire AUs and Special Powers AUs are probably my absolute favorites, but other supernatural elements can be good too (though I tend to avoid werewolf AUs because I'm just not into the pack dynamics and general furriness that tend to be prevalent in werewolf AUs). It's really important that the canon is set in the mundane world, though. When a fic tries to cram supernatural elements into an already fantastical world, it just tends to feel crowded/messy/jarring to me. Sometimes I can still get into it, if it's well-written, but on the whole I feel that fantastical canons are very unideal for making fantastical AUs out of.

I also love a specific (but sadly uncommon) kind of soulmates AU, where having a soulmate is actually rare, and then there's some kind of complicating factor, like they don't realize they're soulmates for a long time, or they mistakenly believe the other doesn't want them or something like that. Also, the fic needs to show me actual relationship development, and not just rely on them being soulmates to convince me it's True Love.

As far as fusions with other texts, it's hard to top Potterverse AUs for me.

And for purely smutty purposes, I favor ABO, but it's very hit and miss for me. I've learned to read the tags closely and nope out if I get squicky vibes early on.

My current fandom is super small and there are actually no AUs. I really want a cop/detective AU, or one where they work at a store that sells Western gear (no idea why that one lol, it's just something I thought of and I want it).

I'm really fond of 'one thing was different and that caused an avalanche of changes' AUs. I also really hate when one thing was different but everything else was the same because, uh, what was the point???

And I'll never get enough of soulmates/marriage law fic.

Yesss, minor canon divergence leading to MAJOR canon divergence is pretty much the only kind of AU I'm actually interested in reading, actually. :D

YES I hate this as well. I hate it when there's something substantially different then the fic just follows along with the canon episodes after that. Like, this different thing should have changed SOMETHING.

My current pet peeve is a soulmate AU fic where they go the entire season without realizing it and then fight and separate at the end JUST LIKE THEY DID IN CANON. What was the point of any of that???

I love 'magic is real!!' AUs, and also anything set In Spaaaaaaaaace! and *some* period stuff, but only if the author actually has a good grasp of the historical period.

Dunno if a fix-it is considered an AU, but I love a good, thoughtful, SMART fix-it.

Arranged marriage/royalty AUs. There's just something about being squeezed together like coal in an arranged marriage until the pressure forces people to get emotionally intimate with the contrast of highly ritualized social etiquette in the background until there's a diamond relationship.

Yes, love those too. Or green card fake marriage.

Anything with actual stakes and not “pretending as a joke on a roommate”.

I love reading Mafia AU fics, Marriage Law AU fics (this sometimes ties into A/B/O fics, and I don't mind it too much), and lately, I've found a few (three) pirate/mermaid/siren AU fics that I'm really digging! And of course, AU's where character with power/magic ends up in non magical world (i.e. ours) with or without their powers (depends how it's handled).

Read one really good political AU, and on occasion, I like a historical AU.

Daemon AUs (you know, where a person's soul takes the form of an animal) are usually good value - there's so much interesting things you can do with characterisation.

Love these!

Every fandom needs at least one.

I love these too, but the only fandom I've actually read them for was Sherlock. Sooo many Daemon AUs in that fandom. I remember reading one where Sherlock was Mycroft's Daemon(!). Not my fave of the bunch, but very memorable for the trippy and ingenious way it played with the trope.

Canon divergence, For Want of a Nail, space opera, brainships

- historical AUs that are not from really common periods
- science fiction AUs
- ghost hunting, vampire, shapechanger, any other kind of contemporary fantasy AU
- detective AUs
- arranged marriage
- celebrity and royalty
- sugar daddy
- fusions for stuff I like

I really don't care for ABO. Don't like epic fantasy or fairy tale AUs. I don't usually like modern AUs where they're just random mundane contemporary AUs for non-modern / genre fandoms, although I end up reading them sometimes bc I feel like a lot of smut is set in modern AUs for some reason. Superhero AUs are mostly a miss unless it's done exceptionally well.

I could see mob boss AUs being good but I don't think I've ever found a really good one somehow. And there aren't nearly enough science fiction AUs for my taste. The things I haven't ever really seen but think would be really good - Ruritanian romance AU, and thief / heist team AU, so still a criminal AU but a different angle on it than mobster (although I guess Leverage Fusion is basically that).

I love a really good soul mate AU with drama. I don't just want the main characters to find out they're soul mates then deal with it, I want them to hate each other, and for one of them to find out and pretend they don't know, or one of them to not know and the other to be pining, or for them to both know and fight it hard, etc.

Basically, make the premise a source of dramatic narrative tension, not a cheap way to say your OTP is meant to be.

I think this is great stuff but I also genuinely love it when the story is just about how awesome it is to have a soulmate and how they just get each other on a perfect superhuman level

Also, platonic soulmates

I really like Royalty or Politics AU's, where one of the pairing is the President or a Prince or something, and it's focused on the political ramifications of them coming out.
