De-extinction

(Anonymous) 2022-12-31 12:34 am (UTC)(link)
If you could bring back to life any extinct species, you get a fully functional population not just a pet, which would you choose?

I'd go for either Dimetrodon or Anisodon, they both look so visually distinctive and there is so much we don't know about either. Although, to be fair, we'd probably find it easier to live alongside a herd of Anisodons than dimetrodons.

What about y'all, FS?

Stegosaurus because I love them.

Thylacine because I want to believe they are not extinct.

Mammoths, or pygmy elephants, or dwarf mammoths

I want there to be more elephant like things in the world and I want them to be small and cute

any animals that have been part of the destruction humans have caused to a species, so thylacine, certain types of elephants, rhinoceroses, mammoths, are at the top of my list

Yeah, or the dodo or something. I think the problem with bringing back really ancient creatures is the environment and ecosystem they lived in just doesn't exist anymore and they may not be able to survive outside of zoos. Something that went extinct in the last few thousand years could probably re-establish itself in the wild just fine.

Nuralagus.

I have only found out about this giant rabbit right now and I love it already!

Giant sloth. Those would be amazing and I kinda want to see a traffic jam caused by one of those massive motherfuckers just crossing the freeway.

I bet these had an awesome call. And probably loud enough to blow out your eardrums if you were anywhere nearby.

Archaeoindris

I just think lemurs are super neat.

They would have to be species where their natural environment still exists enough to support a populations, so thylacines (if the Tasmanian government actually manages to not log all its forests, including ones where critically endangered birds live right now).

Re: De-extinction

(Anonymous) 2022-12-31 05:00 am (UTC)(link)
being Tasmanian this (the logging) frustrates me to no end and I fully believe the thylacine is still out there, just changed its habits to match what happened to it, like the elephants that started going out at night to avoid poachers. much of our forest is unexplored like many North American forests, especially in the areas that are inaccessible to people unless you fly in by helicopter.

Or just do a bit of habitat restoration on the side while you're bringing the species back

this makes me think of the weird animals in the After Man book.
