Honestly, it feels like the alt-right parts of fandom are just really loud right now. Star Wars and Doctor Who fandoms are the same.

DA To me, it feels like both the alt-right and the extreme left are very, very loud right now, and it isn't just big fandoms like Doctor Who, the MCU and Star Wars. It's pretty much everywhere.

No, but sometimes you can persuade people to change their minds to not support the Nazis. Also, not everyone who disagrees with you is a Nazi, but I think you knew that already. You just like screaming at people.

If someone needs persuading to not support Nazis, that’s usually a lost cause. People who have been deradicalized usually do it on their own. Not because the people they looked down on were just that nice to them. If someone really goes “well I was considering not being a Nazi, but then you were mean to me” they’re almost always lying. And if they aren’t lying, it’s pretty fucked up that they would rather be a Nazi than not join a genocidal group to spite people who weren’t pleasant to them. AYRT might have been overly harsh and abrasive. Not to mention jumping to Nazis out of nowhere. But they’re not wrong that you can’t get through to everyone with kindness. Because some people don’t care about kindness or meanness. They just hate people for bigoted reasons.

I'm having a hard time thinking of an extreme left equivalent to the alt-right just because however hard left the left is, it just hasn't been as actually, RL violent as the hard right. Like, the left may joke about firing billionaires into the sun and advocate for redistributing wealth and so on, but the right has an actual body count.

And even though both sides engage in online screaming matches, only the right goes out and shoots people on the regular, so equating them feels disingenuous.

It is disingenuous. The way the alt-right/nazi/republicans justify the horrible things they do is to project those things onto their opponent. "They're doing it, so we can do it too!" Hence saying that leftists and drag queens are pedo traffickers even though just about everyone arrested for pedophilia and sex trafficking is very much right of center. Anyone who says there's a leftist equivalent to the alt-right/nazis is an alt-right/nazi.

What they’re saying isn’t untrue, just because the members of the right and left basically switched due to the parties themselves shifting throughout history. And history isn’t unimportant, but it’s clearly not what people are talking about here. They’re talking about the present and recent history.

What the commenter above said. Nice try to misdirect, but it won't work. We're talking modern day politics. Lots of republicans and priests getting arrested for csa. Name one drag queen who has also been arrested for csa. I'll wait.

This is true. But I also see plenty of violent rhetoric on the left, of the "destroy anyone who disagrees with me on anything" variety. I've seen all conservative people equated to Nazis who should be destroyed. I've seen the online left try to get people fired from their jobs for petty reasons based on hearsay. And it is just as prone to turning on any dissent as the alt-right. Fighting for our rights is one thing; calls to destroy the opposition are another. I've lived long enough to have seen civil rights erode majorly in my country; I don't want them to be eroded any more.

I don't think constantly screaming at other people and telling them they are evil is the best or most effective way to persuade them to change their minds on anything. In my experience that just leads them to double down and is very counter-productive in the long run.

It may give the screamer a lovely dopamine hit and the feeling that they're doing something but it's not going to change anything in the real world. That's going to take work and most of the online screamers don't really want to do that. It doesn't feel good. It's hard, often discouraging, and there are rarely quick victories.

As for shooting people, right now it's true that the right is the ones doing it, but the left has been responsible for a lot of violence in the past. Just because someone is left-leaning doesn't mean they don't have a personal agenda aimed at their own benefit or that it's impossible to end up doing harm and evil even if your cause is good.

I have; but that’s hardly relevant to the current left that the conversation is actually about. Something from before modern 21st century history isn’t really that relevant even if we’re talking about the right. The incidents of the right being the only ones actually shooting people up the majority of the time in the present is what was specifically talked about. So when you said “the left has committed a lot of violence too”, of course someone would assume you must mean something as present as the shooters on the right. Why do you think “yeah, the right are the people who are the active shooters, but what about the Soviet gulag?” is a good counter-argument? It sounds like a gotcha attempt I’d see from a disingenuous right-winger on Twitter trying to go in defense mode. And I’m assuming that’s not what you’re going for.
