The collective taste of Booktok is largely the collective taste of readers. I mean obviously there are some demographics of bookreaders who don't go on Tiktok. But it's not a bad approximation of what readers actually want. "Shitty YA written for the post-Twilight crowd" is in fact what a lot of readers want. Those are the books that people actually enjoy and want to read. Booktok didn't make readers like those books. This is what real people actually want from books.

there are definitely layers to booktok books beyond YA (the "feral women" trend for the literary fiction girlies comes to mind), but they do tend to have being not very good/Just Ok in common.

at least that's what my friend who liked every book she read in 2022 except those recommended by tiktok told me, lol.

I find it very stressful tbh. Writing and looking good/being funny on video are a different skillset. They exist in some of the same people but not all. And I do want to sell my books but no one is going to buy my book because they saw me on TikTok.

I mean your point is apparently that people on Tiktok have terrible taste in books but if that's true it's hardly the only place.

i am actually amazed theres a thing like booktok at all. most tiktok users seem like not having the reading comprehension or attention span for what they claim to read and like.

There's definitely multiple facets to booktok. There is 100% the generic 'new popular' booktok posts that do seem to do much better than the diverse/interesting/more niche posts, but there's a lot of different types of posts.

And as someone who doesn't mind "popular" stuff (a lot of stuff is popular for a reason), a lot of what shows up on my fyp is curated by my interest in seeking out more diverse and different types of books and authors, which is nice.

I do wish though that there were more posts about older books because a lot of posts seem to be about unreleased/new releases which I can't get yet at my local libraries (and I refuse to buy every new book without testing the waters because I am POOR and not looking to be BROKE).

I try to be "you do you" about this stuff but Booktok/Bookstagram to me seems to be less about actually analysing and enjoying what they've read and more "look at how many trendy books I've read in an impossibly short amount of time before anyone else found them!" and that isn't how I read so I just can't get into that whole sphere.

I just don't take recommendations from either BookTok or Bookstagram. I like looking at everyone's aesthetic pictures and videos of their books and reading rooms, but my tastes don't jive with the algorithm. Even Goodreads sucks at recommending books that I'd like.

I do think a case for fraud can be made from these kinds of things. Same with ads for products that say things aren't just exaggerations but are actually false. I would also be okay with any people being able to win against politicians for any explicit lies during campaign ads or speeches.
