I just can't with BookTok in general because 1) I'm a reader. I like text. I get a lot more out of that, both in pleasure and in memory retention than I do from someone's face on screen talking at me, and 2) everyone is so young and pretty (relatively) and I think that has to be something the algorithm pushes. I don't think that's a representative sampling of the best writers or the people with the most interesting opinions. There's no way all the smartest people who know the most about books are 20somethings with good lighting and straight teeth.

On the one hand, I'm not convinced an algorithm knows what conventional human attractiveness looks like.

On the other hand, I know humans do, and that decides such things as "how long they watch this video before scrolling to the next one"...
