from my (admittedly very limited) understanding, female characters who have "unhinged energy", who are messy or crack under the pressure they're under. books i've seen recommended in the genre includes titles like ottessa moshfegh's my year of rest and relaxation, a certain hunger by chelsea g summers, nightbitch by rachel yoder... the list goes on.
