Yeah, when Jewish fans say characters are Jewish they might just mean culturally, not religiously. They could be saying the character seems like they come from a Jewish background (or something analogous if it's not set in the real world).

Sadly (or not), Jewish culture is heavily religious. And because of it people often think jewish=Judaism

(I am partly Jewish, but I come from mixed atheist background, so mostly the only Jewish thing about me is gene-pool). But I believe different people have different experiences. And there are a lot of atheist from Jewish cultural background.
FMA isn't the bad choice, it's interesting to read Elrics like this.

I think the secret-maker just used Ed as an example of an atheist character, not as a Jewish-headcanon example.

...though idk, there may be something to explore with Ed and Al being ethnically half-Xerxian?

AYRT
I damn, this was just an example, I missed it.
But really this is an interesting exploration. I mean, FMA is is easily translated on a real life conflicts and histories. I need someone with a better knowledge than me to get into parallels, but I think they ARE there

I think the Amestrian-Ishvallan situation has some pretty clear allegories, for instance...

Xerxes, on the other hand, I'm fascinated by, because Ed and Al are the ONLY people left of Xerxian descent, and they didn't even know it existed. By the time they're born, it's been gone for centuries. It doesn't seem to matter much to them, honestly, but juxtaposed against characters like Scar and Major Miles (and obviously every other character who survived the Ishvallan massacre), I have so many thoughts.
