Would you take this bargain?

(Anonymous) 2023-01-02 03:50 am (UTC)(link)
A million dollars, but you have to live somewhere where you'd get zero in-person human contact for an entire year. You can still communicate by phone, e-mail, zoom, etc. All of your basic needs are met, your living space is comfortable and your basic expenses like food and clothing are paid for, you can bring any or all of your possessions, including pets. There's high speed wifi. You can leave your house, but there's nobody around for miles and miles, just uninhabited forest. Would you do it?

With my balance problems this is not a great scenario. Medical needs alone would likely prompt me to bail maybe three months in.

I already went through this with covid lockdown. I want my million dollars.

I would consider doing it for a million dollars, and would definitely do it for 3 million or more

That sounds like the BIGGEST win-win situation I could ever imagine tbh. Taking into account that's been my life for the past few years, except I had to go out on some days to work on a dreadful job.

No thanks, sounds like a serial killer kidnapper kind of proposal. There’s supposedly no one around for miles but the house has high speed internet? Nuh uh.

Yep. I agree with greghousesgf that this is basically covid lockdown (although for me that didn't last anywhere close to a full year). I live alone and don't have much of a social life anyway and would happily put what I've got on hold for a year if it means being able to pay off my house, fix a bunch of stuff on it, replace my aging car, and still have hundreds of thousands of dollars left over.

Re: Would you take this bargain?

(Anonymous) 2023-01-02 05:55 am (UTC)(link)
Exactly. Thanks to COVID lockdown most of my social life these days is online anyway, so as long as I could talk to people that way I'd be fine. Yeah, it would kind of suck not to be able to see my local friends for a while, but the money would be more than worth it.

IDK I'm not exactly the life of the party socially myself, but even just being able to go out and be around people, walking down the street, or at a coffeeshop, or what have you, is something.

Re: Would you take this bargain?

(Anonymous) 2023-01-02 05:05 am (UTC)(link)
That sounds amazing. I don't even need the million to agree, but I'll take it.

Re: Would you take this bargain?

Right? Taking into account that during the pandemic I had to work locally thrice a week on a sickening job I hated for 15k a year, honestly 30k to live the NEET dream for a year sounds perfect already.

NOOO, definitely not!! I need my people! I go crazy if I don't interact with at least one other person a day, even if it's just a barista or a cashier. I love spending time alone and outdoors, but I'd be crawling up the walls after a week like that.

That's true but being able to talk to people on the phone would help

Re: Would you take this bargain?

+1

Video calls and phone calls are not enough, as I learned during COVID. I need people. I'm the same way -- I like my alone time, but I need people, my people and sometimes just people! And hugs! When I had family members with COVID, I missed hugging them!

As much as I could use the money, I think the process would be too taxing.

In a heartbeat. I'm not enough of a recluse to think this sounds like a good time, but I don't think it would be such torture that I'd need a bunch of therapy after the fact. It mostly seems like a crazy experience that would make a cool story to tell years down the road. Add a million dollars onto the pot and it mostly just sounds like winning a million dollars, plus a very, very odd and very, very long vacation.

Take modern technology (internet, e-readers, mp3 players, telephone) out of the picture and, well, I'd still say yes but I'd have a lot more trepidation about it. Provided that the area was guaranteed to be safe and I had a phone capable of dialing 911 if necessary.

I mean, assuming the deal wouldn't be voided if I needed serious medical attention and I had to call for help, and also that if my pets needed medical attention I could, idk, put them in a carrier on the porch, lock myself in a closet, and call for a vet to come pick them up and bring them back afterwards, sure. Especially if I could get my job back afterwards, since it's not one that's possible to do remotely.

It would also help if someone could stop by my house to water my garden and pick up my mail.

I doubt I'd enjoy being totally isolated, and I'd probably need to get an online social life, but I don't think I'd go any more nuts than I already am, tbh.

In this economy and inflation, gotta make it at least 2 or 3 million.
Is there a good security system? What's the security situation in the woods Like, any wolves, bears, monsters? Sorry, watched too many horror movies that take place in a lonely cottage in the woods.
But yeah, I could see myself doing this.

Hell yes
I already did this during COVID which lasted more than a year

I need medical care so this is impossible lmao

Re: Would you take this bargain?

Absolutely not. I don’t always actually interact with people that much, but I’d prefer to have the option, I’d prefer to know people are there. That’s why I’ve always lived in neighborhoods that have houses close to each other. I’ve never wanted to live in an isolated place, no matter how beautiful the scenery may be. The possibility of having bad wifi is another reason I wouldn’t want to live in an isolated place, but that’s not relevant considering your hypothetical scenario has good wifi. So it just comes down to me not wanting to be away from people. Even if I could still keep in contact with my friends and loved ones, if it’s only through a screen, I don’t want that.

fucking hell yes - this is virtually my life now anyway (i work from home, my friends and family all live some distance away and transport is shite)

Already did this in 2020 (even lost a pet during it, and the worst part was afterward, when all I wanted was a hug and there was nobody to help me). Same level of communication but deep in a beautiful forest? I can watch birds and make things and my pet won't die halfway through? Where do I sign up?
