Happy New Year!

(Anonymous) 2023-01-01 09:12 pm (UTC)(link)
Here's to hoping for a good 2023!

Re: Happy New Year!

(Anonymous) 2023-01-01 09:18 pm (UTC)(link)
It has already had its first screw up here. The first hymn in church this morning had one set of lyrics in the hymnal and a different set of lyrics displayed on the church's sing a long tv screen. Half the congregation singing one version, the other singing another, and everyone getting all confused and faltering to a stop. They say that whatever you do on New Year's Day is what you'll be doing the rest of the year. So, I guess this year's theme is already confusion, tech and paperwork problems.

Happy 2023, everyone. Is it 2024 yet?

It's not off to a great start for me. My boiler broke down today and I'm now without heating or hot water until the engineer can come.

Thank you! Happy new year to everyone! <3

My first day was kind of good, actually. I watched some Law & Order and organized my bujo for the new year.

I’m near the end of a 12 hour shift. That’s not a complaint- my job is pretty easy. And it went well today, so if the rest of the year goes this well (not saying it will) I’ll be happy.

Fandom question, or maybe not fandom

(Anonymous) 2023-01-01 10:01 pm (UTC)(link)
Honestly I decided to start the year by chatting to relatives (the old 'are you dating yet') and reading a BL webcomic and now am left wondering: do people ACTUALLY feel things like body burning or ears ringing when they kiss or are those just poetic wordings?

Because (granted, as a 30 yo woman who's kissed only a few times) I never felt anything special when kissing and have been wondering if I am really just ace or maybe an aroace who happens to (have learned to) be into romance stories. eh

(Anonymous) 2023-01-01 10:08 pm (UTC)(link)
idk about those specific descriptors but yeah, a good makeout leaves me flushed and warm. it's arousal. I've never been in love though so I can't speak to having arousal reactions over barely-there physical contact or emotional situations like in fiction.

(Anonymous) 2023-01-01 10:11 pm (UTC)(link)
Ears ringing I don't know about, but warmth and burning sure

I have no idea tbh, I've been in a 10 year long relationship and kissing for me is just kind of gross honestly. It doesn't make me feel tingly or warm or anything described in books, it's just wet and unpleasent for me. But I also don't like being touched very much so it's probably part of that.

Kissing does generate a physical response, but it's also worth remembering that the same response gets exaggerated for the sake of the fantasy in these works of fiction. After all, what people are looking for there is an idealized idea of romance and sex, which has absolutely nothing wrong with it. Feeling hot and bothered in real life? Yes. Ears ringing? My sibling in god you might be having a stroke.

Ears ringing, not personally.

But if I'm attracted to someone, kissing can lead to arousal (which to some people could feel like body burning I guess).

Basically, all the bodily metaphors in romance novels to do with kissing/sex etc are about arousal. So just copy replace what arousal means to you and it should make more sense.

Personally, I never felt anything like that until I actually kissed someone I felt attracted to. Without that, kissing is a bit gross to me.

Are there physiological effects due to arousal? Yes. Do they vary in nature and intensity for each individual depending upon their circumstances? Also, yes. General body state, immediate body state (like injury or illness), mood, attraction, and environment can all play a part.

Warmth definitely. Horny and stoned feel very similar to me as far as the generating of heat goes. Hence the term 'love stoned'.

Never heard anything about ear ringing before though.

Ears ringing, no, that hasn't happened to me.

Overall body warmth/flushing, genital tingling, desire to move closer and make more body contact with the person, a sort of high floaty feeling, definitely yes.

I feel like a lot of it comes from the oft-repeated "show, don't tell" advice that is hammered into most writers' brains. Emphasizing how the kiss makes the characters feel through description rather than just directly saying "the kiss was good, and it made [character A] realize he was truly in love with [character B]. It's more a way to "show, not tell" passion than anything.

Still, I do think lot of writers over-compensate, over-complicating their descriptions to the point of unbelievability to emphasize character feelings when something more understated or simple could be more effective at communicating the same thing.

The "ears ringing" for me is more like... going inside an underground tunnel with pressure, or diving underwater.
It's like getting a hit of adrenaline/endorphins, like when you exercise really hard until you're exhausted but then gain a sudden burst of energy, or drink something cold and fizzy.

It's definitely more noticeable during a really good orgasm, but it can happen during kissing, or when you're physically close to someone you're really really into and your body is having a physical reaction but your brain hasn't caught up yet.

Please don't think there's anything wrong with you if you've never experienced it. I'm a very sexual person and it's still rare for me. Someone earlier mentioned low blood pressure and I concur, I have low blood pressure as well. So could be related to that. I faint easily.

Or you could be ace like you said, nothing wrong about that, I just mean that the feeling isn't a typical response to getting kissed (I think) but it can happen.

What do you want to do in 2023?

(Anonymous) 2023-01-01 10:32 pm (UTC)(link)
Not necessarily your resolutions, but what things, big or small, do you want to do in the next 12 months?

Re: What do you want to do in 2023?

(Anonymous) 2023-01-01 10:35 pm (UTC)(link)
For me, I want to be able to run a full 5k without stopping or walking. I also want to try baking my own bread and making sushi.

Get my commercial drivers licence, visit the Isle of Arran, go to either Manchester or London, ideally get paid to do so as per first goal.

Make actual friends, I guess. But I know walking around with a fear of "you'd better not be a (important topic)denying asshole backstabber in disguise" isn't great, doesn't come off warmly and isn't anyone else's problem anyway. I know that's shit I need to work on. It just makes it hard to know who can be trusted and who can't.

Hoping to get that ID theft shit issue resolved in my favor soon. But it's been quiet so who knows wtf is going on.

I'd like to find affordable housing in an area that isn't shit or besieged by fucking bugs. Well, I guess that's at least partly dependent upon external factors.

Well, I guess this is turning more into a wishlist than stuff to be planned. On the fandom side, I hope to have a great of inspiration and am able to complete all those works in progress.

Question

(Anonymous) 2023-01-02 02:47 am (UTC)(link)
I've had this weird feeling in my ear off and on all day. I've had ringing before, but this is different. It feels like I'm feeling my pulse as well as hearing it. Like my ear is actually throbbing along with my heartbeat. But not all the time, not regular, just periodically for a few minutes and then stops.

Would you take this bargain?

(Anonymous) 2023-01-02 03:50 am (UTC)(link)
A million dollars, but you have to live somewhere where you'd get zero in-person human contact for an entire year. You can still communicate by phone, e-mail, zoom, etc. All of your basic needs are met, your living space is comfortable and your basic expenses like food and clothing are paid for, you can bring any or all of your possessions, including pets. There's high speed wifi. You can leave your house, but there's nobody around for miles and miles, just uninhabited forest. Would you do it?
